Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom on September 3rd. Senior Yarianne Gonzalez recorded her 1,000th career assist as a Maverick and had a match-high 35 assists. Senior Larissa Schneid had a match-high 17 kills with seven digs and senior Selma Vulic had a match-high 10 digs. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2001. The Mavericks look to start 5-0 for the first time since 2001. Mercy earned their first win over 2021 NCAA Tournament participant Southern Connecticut State since 1999 on August 26th. The Mavericks are 1-5 in their last six meetings against AIC with the lone win coming in five sets in 2019. The Mavericks are led by Schneid who has been named ECC Player of the Week twice. She has a team-high 54 kills with 44 digs on the season. Vulic was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week on August 29th and has a team-high 65 digs. Gonzalez has a team-high 149 assists with 32 digs and has been named ECC Setter of the Week twice. Junior Anyelainy Vizcaino Araujo was named to the ECC Honor Roll on August 29th and is second on the team with 46 kills to go along with 36 digs. Senior Julia Pomerleau ranks third on the team with 32 kills and has a team-high 12 blocks on the year. Senior Stéphanie Lankhorst was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is third on the team with 32 kills and leads the team with a .443 hitting percentage. Mercy went 13-15 in 2021 and qualified for the ECC Championship for the second straight season. In 2021, the Mavericks finished with their highest winning percentage overall and in ECC play since 2005. Mercy was picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll. Leading the returners is Schneid who was named First Team All-ECC last season after leading the team in kills (327) and aces (48). She also was second on the team in digs (307) and ranked third in the ECC in kills. Also returning is Gonzalez who was tabbed First Team All-ECC last year after recording 885 assists, 310 digs and 32 aces. She led the team in assists and digs. Senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado returns after being named to the ECC Honor Roll three times last year. She had 248 kills, ranking second on the team in kills. Vulic will return after ranking fourth on the team in digs with 268 last season. Lankhorst also returns after posting 162 kills and 59 blocks a year ago. Lankhorst placed second on the team in blocks in 2021.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
AIC earned a 3-0 win over Molloy and a 3-1 win over Saint Anselm in their last matches on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets enter Tuesday's match on a seven-match winning streak and are 4-0 at home. AIC was receiving votes nationally in the AVCA Poll last week. The Yellow Jackets are the defending NE10 Champions and were picked first in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 29-7 last season. AIC advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Daemen in the East Region Final. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament back in 2018. AIC is led by graduate student Andrea Serra Rosa who set the school record for most career kills this past weekend and has a team-high 113 kills on the season with 85 digs. Sophomore Paola Soto Burgos is second on the team with 94 kills and sophomore Aleksandra Ivanovic is third with 90 kills. Junior Naomi Eckert Rivera has a team-high 390 assists with 110 digs. Freshman Perla Rosa has a team-high 120 digs and sophomore Amber Williams has a team-high 40 blocks.
