Schneid Records Team-High 18 Kills as Volleyball Battles RV AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 13, 2022) – Despite a team-high 18 kills from senior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 17-25) decision to RV American International College on Tuesday night at Butova Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (4-1) suffer their first loss of the season, while the Yellow Jackets (11-1) have won eight matches in a row.

Schneid had a team-high 18 kills with five digs and senior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) had a team-high 37 assists. Senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) had nine kills and a team-high 13 digs and senior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had seven kills and a match-high five blocks. Senior Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had nine digs and senior Julia Pomerleau (Portland, Maine/University of Southern Maine) had six kills.

AIC was led by Andrea Serra Rosa who had a match-high 19 kills.

Mercy scored the first point of the match on a Anyelainy Vizcaino Araujo (Santo Domingo Oeste, D.R./Southwestern CC) kill, but the hosts scored the next four points to take a 4-1 lead. The Mavericks later cut the deficit to one, 7-6, after a Pomerleau kill. However, AIC went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Mercy continued to battle and made it 14-11 after a Schneid kill. The Yellow Jackets followed with a 7-2 spurt to build a 21-13 lead. A Gonzalez kill later in the set cut the AIC lead to 22-20. The Yellow Jackets scored the final three points of the set to earn a 25-20 set one win.

The Mavericks took a 9-8 lead in set two after a Rivera Maldonado kill. AIC ensued with four straight points to take a 12-9 lead and later increased the lead to 17-11. A Schneid kill would make it 22-18 in favor of the hosts, but the Yellow Jackets scored three of the next four points to close out the set, 25-19.

Despite being down two sets to the 2021 NCAA Tournament East Region Runner-Up, Mercy continued to play hard in the third set taking a 7-2 lead in the third set. AIC clawed their way back and tied the set at 16-16. The Yellow Jackets looked to close out the match in three sets, but Mercy had other ideas scoring three straight points to take a 19-16 lead. AIC would cut the Mavericks lead to one, 23-22, late, but a kill from Pomerleau and an AIC attack error gave Mercy a 25-22 set three win.

AIC jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set four and later held a 22-13 lead. Mercy inched closer with four straight points to make it 22-17. The Yellow Jackets went on to score the final three points of the set to earn a 25-17 set four win to secure the match.

Mercy hit .185 with 45 kills, 36 digs, six blocks and four aces. AIC hit .242 with 54 kills, 46 digs, six blocks and eight aces.

Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 17th when they face Pace and Goldey-Beacom at Pace starting at 11 a.m.
