Game Preview: No. 25 Women's Soccer Hosts D'Youville on Saturday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 2-1 win over Holy Family on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Kayla Camacho who had a goal and an assist and by graduate student Nikki Bermudez who also scored. Junior Madison Rosa added an assist and freshman Kamy Anaya made six saves to earn the win. The Mavericks are looking to start 6-1 for the first time since 2018. Mercy also looks to start 2-0 in ECC play for the second straight season. Mercy has won five games in a row after opening their season with a loss. The Mavericks are 1-0 all-time against D'Youville with the lone meeting coming last year. Mercy is ranked No. 25 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Anaya was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Camacho, and freshman Ancksu Dixon were named to the Honor Roll on Monday. Bermudez was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Dixon was tabbed Rookie of the Week and Cooper was named to the Honor Roll last week. Bermudez and Camacho have a team-high four goals on the year and Dixon has nine points on three goals and three assists. Camacho has a team-high 11 points on the year with three assists to go along with her four goals. Graduate student Claudia McKail has a goal and an assist and junior Toni Valadez, graduate student Jessica Hoyt, junior Skyler Schwenkler and sophomore Isabella Messina also have a goal on the season. Graduate student Sydney Cooper and junior also have a team-high-tying three assists. Anaya is 5-1 in goal this season with 18 saves, a .818 save percentage and 0.69 goals-against average. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and began the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.

Scouting the Saints

D'Youville dropped a 1-0 decision to Post on Tuesday after winning their prior two games. The Saints were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 6-9-2 overall last season and 2-5-2 in ECC play. D'Youville is led by one-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Eleonora Cecchini who has a team-high two goals and four points. Sophomores Jillian Bernas and Lily Gallagher also have a goal. Freshmen Jasmina Barhoumi and Jeslyn-Brooke Vallesteros and junior Jordan Pachla all have an assist on the season. This week's USCAA Division I Goalie of the Week graduate student Reaghan Duval is 2-4 in goal with 29 saves, a .744 save percentage and 1.67 goals-against average.
