DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2022) – Powered by a game-high two goals from sophomore Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College), the No. 24 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-1-1, 2-0 ECC) have won four games in a row, all via shutout, and start 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2019. The Saints (1-5, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.
Silva scored his first two goals as a Maverick and senior Benjamin Van Buren (Anderson, S.C./USC Upstate) scored his team-leading third goal of the season. Freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) and seniors David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College), Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) and Marco Passera (Haugesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) all added an assist. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) played the first half in goal and made three saves to earn the win. Freshman Simon Steffensen (Aalborg, Denmark/Aalborghus Gymnasium) played the second half in goal and made one save.
D'Youville was led by Francisco Osorio who had a team-high three shots on goal. Ethan Picard made four saves to take the loss.
Both goalies made a pair of early saves to keep the game scoreless. Mercy ended the scoring drought in the 15th minute when Van Buren put home a corner taken by Schilbred-Eriksen that was touched over by Breitenbach, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks later made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when Silva scored his first goal as a Maverick, following an assist from Baptista. Mercy continued to apply pressure to the Saints backline and Silva found the back of the net again after Passera stumbled in front and fed Silva who fired the ball from in front of the net to give Mercy a 3-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Mercy's defense would allow just one shot on goal for the remainder of the game, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 shutout win.
Mercy held a 17-7 edge in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 21st when they host Queens at 3 p.m.
