Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an impressive 7-2 win over Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Ancksu Dixon who had a game-high six points on her first two collegiate goals and two assists. Junior Kayla Camacho added two goals and graduate students Nikki Bermudez and Jessica Hoyt and junior Skyler Schwenkler also scored. Sophomore Kayla Saavedra, graduate student Sydney Cooper, freshman Emma Best and junior Madison Rosa added an assist. Freshman Kamy Anaya made three saves to earn her first collegiate win in 69:58 minutes of action. Anaya is 1-1 in goal this season with four saves, a .667 save percentage and 1.13 goals-against average. Mercy has won three of their last four games against the Wildcats. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and begin the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year in Claudia McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.
Scouting the Wildcats
Wilmington is coming off a 4-1 loss at Saint Anselm on Wednesday. The Wildcats opened their season on August 26th with a 1-1 tie against Bentley before falling to Adelphi, 5-1, on August 28th. Wilmington was selected third in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 12-5-3 last season. The Wildcats advanced to the CACC Tournament Championship for the second time in program history. Wilmington has been led by sophomore Emilie Larsen who has a team-high two goals. Freshman Annie Holst also has a goal and junior Isabella Lundberg and senior Emily Navarrete both have an assist on the season. Sophomore Mio Nakajima is 0-2-1 in goal with 10 saves, a .500 save percentage and 3.33 goals-against average in 270 minutes of action.
