ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2022) – Despite a goal from senior David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College), the No. 23 Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at the RVC Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (7-2-1, 3-1 ECC) suffer their first ECC loss of the season and see their five-game winning streak come to an end. The Lions (4-2-4, 3-0-1 ECC) move into first place in the ECC standings with the win.
Breitenbach recorded his team-high-tying third goal of the season and senior Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) dished out his fourth assist of the season and now has a team-high eight points on the year. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made three saves to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Ryan Dobson who had a goal and an assist and by Gio Fabiano who also scored. Nick Conklu made four saves to earn the win.
The Mavericks recorded all three shots on goal in the first half, but Conklu stopped all three to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Mercy finally broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute when Breitenbach headed home a cross from Baptista to give the Mavericks 1-0 lead.
Elvestad made two more saves to keep Mercy in the lead, but Molloy finally scored in the 72nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Fabiano found the back of the net after a Dobson assist to even the game.
The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into the final minutes of play. Dobson would put the Lions ahead for good with a goal in the 89th minute to make it 2-1. Mercy could not find the equalizer and Molloy came away with the win.
Molloy held a 13-9 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 5-5. Mercy held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 1st when they play at UDC at 1 p.m.
