Wall and Barrera Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Earns 60-46 Win Over Bloomfield

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2023) – Powered by senior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and freshman Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 60-46 win over Bloomfield College on Sunday afternoon at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

The Mavericks (9-6) have won four games in a row and start 9-6 for the second straight season. Mercy defeats the Bears (1-13) for the first time since 2017.

Wall had a game-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting with two assists and Barrera scored a career-high-tying 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four rebounds. Graduate student Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had nine points and three assists and sophomore Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) recorded seven points. Junior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) contributed six points and eight rebounds and sophomore Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) had six points. Senior Asha Talib (Allentown, Pa./University of Bridgeport) had one point and a team-high 10 rebounds. Senior Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) had two points and six rebounds and sophomore Abrielle Racine (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Senior) netted two points.

Bloomfield was led by Taneshia Tucker who had a team-high 14 points.

Mercy scored the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead after a Bender layup with 6:26 left in the opening quarter. An Anisha Able jumper made it 7-2 at the 5:23 mark. The Mavericks closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, capped off by a Barrera layup, to take a 15-2 lead after one quarter.

A Stanavich jumper with 8:25 left in the second quarter gave Mercy a 17-2 lead. Bloomfield rallied with a 7-2 run to cut the Mavericks lead to 10, 19-9, with 4:32 remaining in the half. The Mavericks answered with a 10-2 run, finished off by a Tedesco three-point play, to take their largest lead of the half, 29-11, with 45 seconds on the clock. The Bears ended the half with three straight points to cut Mercy's lead to 29-14 at halftime.

The Mavericks started the third quarter on a 10-4 run, ended by a Stanavich jumper, to take a 39-18 lead with 4:49 remaining in the period. Bloomfield later cut the deficit to 19, 46-27, but a Barrera layup gave Mercy a 48-27 lead after three quarters.

A Halvorsen three at the 6:07 mark of the fourth quarter gave Mercy their largest lead of the game, 54-31. Bloomfield ended the game on a 15-6 run to cut the Mavericks lead to 60-46 with 30 seconds left. However, Mercy held on for their fourth straight win.

Mercy shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor, 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from downtown and 75.0 percent (12-of-16) from the foul line. Bloomfield shot 20.6 percent (14-of-68) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 53-42 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 11th when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas College at 5:30 p.m.
