Krohn-Pettersen Scores Game-Tying Goal as RV Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw Against UDC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2023) – Powered by the game-tying goal from sophomore Jorgen Krohn-Pettersen (Stavanger, Norway/Spring Hill College), the RV Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (8-2-5, 4-0-3 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play and earn a draw against the Firebirds (5-6-5, 3-1-4 ECC) for the first time since 2021. Mercy currently sits in second place in the ECC standings and have secured their fifth ECC Championship appearance in six seasons.

Krohn-Pettersen netted his second goal of the season and sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) recorded his second assist of the season. Junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made three saves to earn the draw.

UDC was led by Santiago Gordillo Martinez who scored and by Sergio Becerra who had a game-high seven saves.

The Firebirds found the back of the net in just the 3rd minute of action when Gordillo Martinez fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down and into the net, following a cross from Dennis Meza-Baez, to give UDC a 1-0 lead.

Elvestad made all three of his saves in the first half to keep the Mavericks down just one and Mercy would find the equalizer in the 44th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Krohn-Pettersen fired home a Hanken Tjostheim cross after a Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) corner kick to make it 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Mavericks dominated possession in the second half but were unable to score. Mercy's best chance came in the 72nd minute when a Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) shot hit the crossbar. A Hanken Tjostheim shot attempt went just wide in the final seconds of play and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mercy held a 20-10 edge in shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 12-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 24th when they play at New Haven at 7 p.m.
