DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2023) – Powered by seven different Mavericks scoring, the No. 25 Mercy University men's soccer team exploded for a season-high seven goals in a 7-1 Senior Day win over ECC foe Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Eduardo Costa (Sao Joao da Madeira, Portugal/Sacred Heart University), Daniel Dalmau (Madrid, Spain/College of International Studies – Endicott), Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College), Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College), Saul Melendez (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College), Phillimon Bédard-Khalid (Miami, Fla./Presbyterian College) and Edgar Tellez Jr. (Port Chester, N.Y./Siena College) were recognized for their contributions to the men's soccer program.
The Mavericks (9-3-5, 5-0-3 ECC) end the regular season unbeaten in ECC play and improve to 10-0 all-time against the Wildcats (3-11-1, 2-6 ECC). Mercy has secured the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Championship and will have a bye into the Semifinals. The Mavericks will host a Semifinal matchup on Saturday, November 4th at a time to be determined.
Rodriguez had a game-high four points on a goal and two assists and Fernandes, Dalmau and sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) each had a goal and an assist. Rodriguez recorded his first goal of the season, Fernandes had his fourth, Dalmau netted his first and Hanken Tjsotheim recorded his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Silva produced his third goal of the season and freshman Marius Pignat-Larsen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Rysensteen Gymnasium) and junior Juan Campillo Casas (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Technical Institute) both recorded their first collegiate goals. Juniors Julian Holland (Tokyo, Japan/Iowa Western CC) and Antonio Sas (San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina/Alliance University) and sophomore Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) each had an assist and junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves to earn the win.
Daemen was led by Dennis Montero Guerrero who scored and by Harry Fifth who made five saves in the first half to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 27th minute when Schilbred-Eriksen sent a ball to Hanken Tjostheim, who crossed it in front to Rodriguez, who fired the ball into the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Silva made it 2-0 in the 35th minute when he finished a breakaway attempt.
Pignat-Larsen later gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead in the 40th minute following passes from Holland and Dalmau. Hanken Tjostheim finished off a Fernandes cross in the 42nd minute to give Mercy a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime.
Fernandes made it 5-0 in the 57th minute after a cross from Rodriguez and Dalmau netted his first goal of the season in the 63rd minute to give the Mavericks a 6-0 advantage. Campillo Casas found the back of the net for the first time in his career in the 72nd minute, following a Sas assist, to increase the Mercy lead to 7-0.
A Montero Guerrero goal in the 82nd minute broke the shutout and made it 7-1. However, the Mavericks cruised the rest of the way and earned the 7-1 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 21-7 edge in shots and a 16-3 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 4th when they host an ECC Championship Semifinal at a time to be announced.
