Hanken Tjostheim Scores Game-High Two Goals as RV Men's Soccer Earns 4-0 Win Over Regionally-Ranked Millersville

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2023) – Powered by a game-high two goals from sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College), the RV Mercy University men's soccer team earned a convincing 4-0 win over regionally-ranked Millersville University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (6-1-3) remain unbeaten in their last nine games and defeat the Marauders (5-2-3) who have dropped two of their last three games.

Hanken Tjostheim now has an ECC-best eight goals and sophomore Jorgen Krohn-Pettersen (Stavanger, Norway/Spring Hill College) and junior Juan José Alvarez Acosta (Medellin, Colombia/St. Andrews University) scored their first goals as Mavericks. Senior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College) dished out his second assist of the season, graduate student Phillimon Bédard-Khalid (Miami, Fla./Presbyterian College) recorded his third assist of the year and sophomore Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) picked up his first assist of the season. Junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made one save to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Elvestad now has 16 career shutouts breaking the school record of 15 set by Nick Papas and Andrew McGovern.

Millersville was led by Michael Dempsey who had a shot on goal. Jack Gabler made two saves to take the loss.

Elvestad made his lone save of the game in the 14th minute to keep the game scoreless. Hanken Tjostheim gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Rodriguez fed him a cross from right to left after a Millerville turnover and Hanken Tjostheim fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net.

Hanken Tjostheim made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute when Bédard-Khalid fed him a through ball and the sophomore finished to give Mercy a two-goal lead. Krohn-Pettersen capped off the scoring in the half with a header goal following a Schilbred-Eriksen corner kick to make it 3-0 at halftime.

The Mavericks backline held the Marauders without a shot on goal in the second half and Alvarez Acosta found the back of the net in the 89th minute following a Millersville turnover to give Mercy a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Shots were tied at 8-8 and Mercy held a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
