DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2023) – Powered by a combined 41 points from junior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) and graduate student Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a 66-50 win over Post University on Wednesday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (6-1) bounce back from their first loss of the season and defeat the Eagles (2-4) for the second straight time.
Mercy was led by Stanavich who had a career-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Wall netted 20 points and had a game-high seven assists with seven rebounds and sophomore Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) recorded a double-double by way of 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) added seven points, seven rebounds and five assists and sophomore Kyla Nembach (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and junior Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) both had three points. Sophomore Megan Marcotte (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) chipped in two points and two blocks.
Post was led by Taina Pagan who had a team-high 13 points.
The Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the 7:27 mark of the first quarter before back-to-back threes from Wall and Nembach gave Mercy an 8-6 lead. Barrera and Stanavich layups increased the Mavericks lead to 12-6 with 3:14 left in the quarter, capping a 10-0 run. Post scored the next five points to cut Mercy's lead to one, 12-11, before a Stanavich layup gave the Mavericks a 14-11 lead. Mercy headed into the second quarter with a 16-13 lead following a Wall layup.
A Barrera layup to open the second quarter gave Mercy an 18-13 lead. Post followed with six unanswered points to take a 19-18 lead with 6:23 remaining in the half. A Wall three gave the lead back to Mercy at 21-19 with 6:08 on the clock. The score was later tied at 25-25 at the 1:54 mark before a Halvorsen three put the Mavericks ahead, 28-25, with 55 seconds remaining. A Naj White free throw cut Mercy's lead to two, 28-26, at halftime.
A Barrera three and Wall free throw to open the second half gave Mercy a 32-26 lead at the 8:49 mark of the third quarter. A pair of Dede Stevenson free throws with 7:39 on the clock cut the Mavericks lead to three, 33-30. Mercy stormed back on a 16-4 run, capped off by a Tedesco free throw, to take a 49-34 lead with 3:09 left in the quarter. Post scored the final four points of the quarter to head into the fourth quarter down 11, 49-38.
The Mavericks opened the fourth quarter on a 17-9 run, finished off by a Stanavich three, giving Mercy their largest lead of the game, 66-47, with 2:16 remaining. The Mavericks led by double figures the rest of the way and earned the 66-50 win.
Mercy shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from downtown and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the foul line. Post shot 28.6 percent (18-of-63) from the field, 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 43-38 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, December 2nd when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 1 p.m.
