Five Mavericks Record Multiple Goals as No. 2/3 Men's Lacrosse Earns 21-12 Win at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2023) – Powered by five Mavericks recording multiple goals, the No. 2/3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 21-12 win over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the fifth straight season and improve to 10-0 all-time against the Golden Knights (0-1). The nine-goal margin of the victory is Mercy's largest in 10 all-time meetings.

Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) led the way with a game-high seven points on a game-high-tying six goals and one assist. He also added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Graduate student Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) added four goals and senior Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) netted three goals. Graduate student Thomas Connors (Bellmore, N.Y./DeSales University) had two goals and an assist and senior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) recorded two goals. Junior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) and freshman Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also scored. Junior Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) had a goal and went 13-of-27 on faceoffs. Junior Cristian Castles (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) dished out an assist and senior Justin Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a game-high four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Graduate student Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made five saves in 54:30 minutes of action to earn the win.

Saint Rose was led by Cam Smith who had a game-high-tying six goals. Ryan Gainor made nine saves to take the loss.

Gibbons scored the game's first goal before Guglielmo scored to make it 2-0 with 11:54 left in the opening quarter. Gibbons netted his second goal of the game to increase the Mavericks lead to 3-0. Two straight goals from the Golden Knights made it 3-2 with 9:36 on the clock. Two more goals from Gibbons and the first of the day from Heyder put the Mavericks up 6-2. Smith recorded the final goal of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 6-3 after the first quarter.

Connors started the scoring in the second quarter with a man-up goal to put the Mavericks up 7-3. Noah Gibson made it 7-4 less than a minute later. However, three straight goals from Kearnan and another from Connors increased the Mavericks lead to seven, 11-4, with 5:21 left in the half. Back-to-back goals from Smith and Nathan Ham made it 11-6 before Kuehner found the back of the net after winning the faceoff to give Mercy a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Three consecutive goals from Votta, Calabria and Guglielmo gave Mercy a 15-6 lead with 11:56 left in the third quarter. Smith ended the run with a goal to make it 15-7, but back-to-back goals from Duchnowski and Kearnan gave Mercy a 17-7 lead after three quarters.

Guglielmo found the back of the net again at the 12:15 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 18-7. Smith and Kearnan traded goals to make it 19-8 with 11:25 left to play. Ham made it 19-9 with 8:35 left before Kearnan scored his final goal of the day with 7:45 on the clock to give the Mavericks a 20-9 lead. Smith later made it 20-10 before Heyder recorded Mercy's final goal at the 5:30 mark to put the Mavericks up 21-10. Saint Rose scored two late goals but the deficit was too much to overcome and Mercy came away with the win.

Mercy held a 50-30 edge in shots and a 21-14 edge in ground balls. Mercy also went 16-of-35 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 19th when they play at No. 4/8 Le Moyne at 12 p.m.
