Harris Records an RBI as Softball Faces Saint Anselm

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 19, 2023) – Despite an RBI from junior Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) in game one, the Mercy College softball team dropped 6-1 and 3-1 decisions to Saint Anselm College on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (0-6) have dropped six straight games to open the season, while the Hawks (5-1) have won five of their first six games.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 6, Mercy 1

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a Gracie O'Hara two-run home run. Saint Anselm added a run in the second inning on a Kate Irwin RBI single.

Saint Anselm increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a Jess Persechino solo home run. Mercy plated their lone run in the sixth inning to make it 4-1. Freshman Cayla Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) singled and junior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) doubled to put runners on second and third. Harris then drove home Crawford on a single when she reached on a bunt to make it 4-1. A groundout ended the inning with a runner on third.

The Hawks scored two more runs in the seventh inning on an Alyssa Wironen two-run home run to make it 6-1. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give Saint Anselm the game one win.

Harris went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Crawford went 2-for-2 with a run. Sisco went 1-for-3 and freshman Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched 3.1 innings with four runs allowed to take the loss.

Saint Anselm was led by Wironen who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Haile Hicks pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and no errors and Saint Anselm had 11 hits and no errors.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 3, Mercy 1

Mercy struck first in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Sisco reached on an error and stole second before moving over to third on a Harris sacrifice bunt. Sisco then scored after Crawford reached on an error by the first baseman to make it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Hawks scored a run on a wild pitch to make it 1-1. Saint Anselm took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Ava Caputo recorded an RBI triple and O'Hara drove in a run on a single to make it 3-1.

Mercy could not score in the sixth or seventh innings, giving Saint Anselm the doubleheader sweep.

Sophomore Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) went 1-for-2 and seniors Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption University) went 1-for-3. Sisco went 1-for-4 with a run and senior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pitched a complete game with three runs allowed and five strikeouts to take the loss.

Saint Anselm was led by Persechino who went 3-for-3 with two runs. Sophia DiPippo pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and one error and Saint Anselm had eight hits and three errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, March 9th when they face Pittsburgh-Johnstown in Florida at 2 p.m.
