LEESBURG, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2023) – Despite a home run from sophomore Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington), the Mercy College softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Bemidji State University before falling 7-3 to Franklin Pierce University on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks (0-10) have dropped 10 games in a row, while the Beavers (9-8) move over .500 on the year and the Ravens (9-5) have won two games in a row.
Game 1: Bemidji State 2, Mercy 1
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Mariah Stevenson hit a two-run double to center field to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
Seppala got the Mavericks on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with her first collegiate home run to center field to make it 2-1.
Junior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) led off the sixth inning with a double but was left stranded at second. The Mavericks were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Beavers the win.
Seppala went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Sisco and freshman Cayla Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) both went 1-for-3. Senior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) allowed one earned run in seven innings with seven strikeouts to take the loss.
Bemidji State was led by Stevenson who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Elle Hastings pitched five innings with one run allowed to earn the win.
Mercy had three hits and one error and Bemidji State had three hits and two errors.
Game 2: Franklin Pierce 7, Mercy 3
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Sisco led off the game with a single and scored following a Ravens error.
The Ravens scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead.
The Mavericks inched closer in the top of the third with two runs to make it 5-3. Senior Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption University) singled and later scored on a Seppala RBI single to make it 5-2. Crawford then singled home the second run of the inning to make it 5-3.
Franklin Pierce scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 7-3. Neither team would score again and the Ravens earned the 7-3 win.
Crawford went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Seppala went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sisco went 1-for-4 and Puglia went 2-for-3. Senior Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) went 1-for-3 and freshman Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) went 1-for-4. Freshman Marina Provencio (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) allowed seven runs in three innings to take the loss.
Franklin Pierce was led by Hannah Wodecki who went 2-for-3 with a home run. Samantha Sylvester pitched three innings to earn the win.
Mercy had eight hits and no errors and Franklin Pierce had six hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Slippery Rock at 9 a.m. and American International at 11:30 a.m. in Florida.
