BUFFALO, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2023) – Powered by a career-high five goals from freshman Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), the No. 2 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 26-2 win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (8-1, 2-0 ECC) have won six games in a row and defeat the Saints (3-7, 0-2 ECC) for the second straight time. The 24-goal margin of the victory is the largest margin of victory in school history.
Duchnowski had a career-high five goals and senior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Junior Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) had two goals and two assists and junior Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had three goals and one assist. Freshman Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) had a career-high three goals with one assist and junior Greg Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two goals and one assist. Sophomore Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had a goal and game-high four assists and sophomore Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) had two goals. Freshman Anthony Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and an assist and graduate student Thomas Connors (Bellmore, N.Y./DeSales University) had a goal and an assist. Graduate student Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and freshman Ryken Kutner (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) also scored and junior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had two assists. Senior Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) dished out an assist and senior PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC) went 9-of-12 on faceoffs with six ground balls. Senior James Distefano (Clarkstown, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had a game-high-tying two caused turnovers and graduate student Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made six saves in 27 minutes to earn the win.
D'Youville was led by Tristan Engelhardt and Suman Ramlall who both scored. Reece Eck made 14 saves to take the loss.
Caskenette opened the scoring onslaught with a goal at the 12:23 mark of the first quarter to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Jack Gibbons made it 2-0 just over 30 seconds later and Duchnowski scored his first goal of the game with 10:55 on the clock to make it 3-0. Back-to-back goals from Heyder gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead with 6:19 left in the quarter. Engelhardt made it 5-1 with 5:57 remaining in the quarter. Caskenette closed the scoring in the quarter to give Mercy a 6-1 lead after the first quarter.
Heyder, Duchnowski and Connors rattled off three goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter to make it 9-1. Votta made it 10-1 at the 11:41 mark before Ramlall netted a man-up goal to make it 10-2. Votta, Duchnowski, Heyder, Barone, DeMonte and Abrahall scored the final six goals of the quarter to give Mercy a 16-2 lead at halftime.
Abrahall opened the scoring in the third quarter with a man-up goal at the 10:40 mark to make it 17-2. Two goals from Greg Gibbons and another from DeMonte increased the Mavericks lead to 20-2 with 4:42 left in the quarter. Duchnowski, Abrahall and Smith tallied the final three goals of the quarter to give Mercy a commanding 23-2 lead after three quarters.
Kutner, Duchnowski and DeMonte scored the final three goals for Mercy to give the Mavericks the convincing 26-2 win.
Mercy held a 50-21 edge in shots, a 22-5 edge in ground balls and went 20-of-31 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 1st when they play at Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
