DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2023) – Powered by 10 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 13/14 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 15-9 win over RV Bloomsburg University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-2) improve to 1-2 all-time against the Huskies (3-1).
Mercy was led by sophomore Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) who had a team-high three goals. Graduate student Emma Rippon (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona University) and seniors Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) each had two goals and graduate students Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech) each had a goal and an assist. Juniors Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) and sophomore Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) also scored. Sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist, a game-high seven draw controls and a game-high three caused turnovers. Freshman Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also had an assist and graduate student Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had two caused turnovers. Junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made two saves in the first half to earn the win and freshman Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made three saves in the second half.
Bloomsburg was led by Annie Rollins who had a game-high four goals. Lauren Foley made a game-high 11 saves to take the loss.
Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest, off an assist from her sister Jaclyn, to give Mercy an early 1-0 lead. An Amanda Stoll goal at the 12:48 mark tied at the game at 1-1. Moussa gave the Mavericks the lead for good with 9:53 on the clock after her first goal of the day to make it 2-1. Erin Shimborske made it 3-1 with 4:07 remaining in the quarter and Jaclyn Grzelaczyk scored the final goal of the quarter, following an assist from her sister Kaitlyn, to give Mercy a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
Rosenfeld made it 5-1 with her first goal of the season at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter. Moussa and Erin Shimborske both scored their second goals of the day to increase the Mavericks lead to 7-1 with 3:10 left in the half. A Corley goal from Lindsey Shimborske gave Mercy an 8-1 lead at halftime.
Moussa scored at the 13:45 mark of the third quarter to give the Mavericks a 9-1 lead. Back-to-back goals from Rippon built the Mercy lead to 11-1 with 11:43 left in the quarter. An Annie Rollins goal made it 11-2, but goals from Hansen, Lopreato and Zarou gave the Mavericks a 14-2 lead after the third quarter.
Corley gave the Mavericks a 15-2 lead with 14 minutes left following an assist from Mott. The Huskies would score the final seven goals of the game to make it 15-9. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome and Mercy earned the 15-9 win.
Mercy held a 31-17 edge in shots, a 24-16 edge in ground balls and a 16-12 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, March 16th when they play at Florida Southern at 7 p.m.
