11 Mavericks Score as No. 15 Women's Lacrosse Earns 18-0 Win Over UDC

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 15, 2023) – Powered by 11 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 15 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-0 win over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (7-6, 3-1 ECC) have won two of their last three games, while the Firebirds (1-10, 0-5 ECC) remain winless in ECC play. Mercy has now earned two shutouts in the same season for the first time in program history.

Graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech) had a game-high seven points on two goals and a game-high five assists and freshman Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) had three goals and an assist and junior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had two goals and sophomore Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), senior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University), graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and junior Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) each had a goal and an assist. Graduate student Emma Rippon (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona University) and junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) also scored and freshman Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had an assist. Sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), graduate student Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Mott each had a team-high two caused turnovers. Junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made one save in three quarters to earn the win. Freshman Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) played the fourth quarter in goal.

UDC was led by Jada Williams who had a shot on goal. Natalia Perkins made 10 saves to take the loss.

The game remained scoreless until the 13:40 mark when Jaclyn Grzelaczyk scored off a feed from Erin Shimborske to make it 1-0. Mott made it 2-0 just over 30 seconds later and Moussa gave Mercy a 3-0 lead with her goal at the 12:07 mark. Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, Hansen, Jaclyn Grzelaczyk and Rosenfeld netted four straight goals to make it 7-0 with 7:33 on the clock. Mott then recorded back-to-back goals less than 30 seconds apart to give the Mavericks a 9-0 lead. Erin Shimborske scored the final goal of the quarter with 2:54 remaining in the quarter to give Mercy a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

Rippon made it 11-0 at the 12:08 mark of the second quarter following a Callow assist. Schreck, Zarou and Corley closed out the quarter with goals to give Mercy a commanding 14-0 lead at halftime.

Hansen scored the lone goal of the third quarter to give Mercy a 15-0 advantage after three quarters.

Corley scored two more goals and Zarou added her second goal of the game in the fourth quarter to give Mercy an 18-0 lead.

Mercy held a 37-2 edge in shots, a 31-15 edge in ground balls and a 19-3 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 18th when they play at Georgian Court at 12 p.m.
