PALISADES PARK, N.J. (Apr. 16, 2023) – Despite a team-high three hits on the day from freshman Cayla Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley), the Mercy College softball team dropped 8-0 and 4-0 decisions to Felician University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (10-26) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Golden Falcons (27-16) have won three of their last four games.
Game 1: Felician 8, Mercy 0 (6 Innings)
Felician took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits and one Mercy error.
The Golden Falcons added a run in the third and four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Daisha Howard recorded an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth to give Felician the 8-0 win via the run-rule.
Crawford went 2-for-3 and senior Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed two earned runs in four innings to take the loss.
Felician was led by Kathryn Steinmetz who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Riley Williams pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had two hits and two errors and Felician had nine hits and no errors.
Game 2: Felician 4, Mercy 0
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth with freshman Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) tossing four shutout innings to start the game. Felician took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an Alexis Velotta RBI single and Howard drove in two more runs with a double to make it 3-0. Steinmetz doubled home Howard to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Mercy could not score in the sixth or seventh innings, giving Felician the sweep.
Junior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) went 2-for-3 and sophomore Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) and senior Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption University) both went 1-for-2. Crawford and senior Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) both went 1-for-3. Secoda allowed four runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
Howard went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Felician. Alexis De La Cruz pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error and Felician had six hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 18th when they play at STAC at 2:30 p.m.
