DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2023) – Despite a game-high 15 saves from graduate student Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), the No. 6/9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-12 decision to No. 2 Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-3) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Panthers (14-0) remain undefeated on the year. Mercy suffers their first home loss of the season.
Umano made 15 saves to take the loss. Graduate student Thomas Connors (Bellmore, N.Y./DeSales University) had three goals and an assist and senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had three goals and an assist. Kearnan recorded his 100th career assist as a Maverick, becoming the fourth Maverick in program history to record 100 career assists. Senior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and graduate student Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) both had two goals and an assist and junior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded a goal and three assists. Junior Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) scored a goal and went 8-of-16 on faceoffs with three ground balls and senior Justin Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) had an assist, a team-high six ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers.
Adelphi was led by Jason Rebaudo who had a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Dylan Renner made 12 saves to earn the win.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead at the 12:53 mark of the first quarter after Heyder scored following a Gerdvil assist. The Panthers tied the game at 1-1 on a Joseph Duchnowski goal with 11:42 on the clock. Gibbons' first goal of the game gave Mercy a 2-1 lead with 6:30 remaining in the quarter. Adelphi scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
Kearnan tied the game at 3-3 off an assist from Calabria just over a minute into the second quarter. The Mavericks retook the lead following Connors goal at the 9:13 mark. Kyle Lewis scored the final goal of the quarter with 5:50 on the clock and the teams headed into halftime tied at 4-4.
The Panthers scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead with 11:59 remaining in the quarter. Kearnan found the back of the net again with 9:07 on the clock to make it 6-5. Adelphi recorded the final four goals of the quarter to take a 10-5 lead after three quarters.
A Brian Harinski goal at the 13:57 mark of the fourth quarter gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game at 11-5. Adelphi looked to have the game well in hand, but Mercy had other ideas and Connors, Heyder, Kearnan and Gibbons rattled off four straight goals to cut Adelphi's lead to 11-9 with 7:15 left. Adelphi won the ensuing faceoff and Joseph Duchnowski scored to give the Panthers a 12-9 lead. Kyle Steinbach later scored with 4:25 on the clock to make it 13-9. The Mavericks had one last run in them as Connors and Calabria netted consecutive goals to make it 13-11 with 1:37 remaining. Kuehner won the ensuing faceoff and scored to get Mercy within one, 13-12, with 1:28 on the clock. Adelphi won the ensuing faceoff and Rebaudo found the back of the net with 22 seconds left to give the Panthers a 14-12 lead. Time would run out on the Mavericks and Adelphi came away with the 14-12 win.
Adelphi held a 50-30 edge in shots, a 40-33 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 15-of-30 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, April 23rd when they play at STAC at 1 p.m.
