ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 2, 2023) – Despite a career-high seven caused turnovers from sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-13 overtime decision to ECC foe Molloy University on Sunday afternoon at the RVC Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (5-5, 1-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end and fall to the Lions (9-3, 3-0 ECC) for the first time since 2015.
Shimborske had a game-high and career-high seven caused turnovers with five ground balls. Sophomores Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) both had a team-high-tying three goals and junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had two goals and one assist. Junior Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had two goals and graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech) had a goal and two assists. Graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and an assist and senior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had a goal, an assist and a game-high-tying six ground balls. Graduate student Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) added five ground balls and three caused turnovers and junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made four saves to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Megan Rugolo who had a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Mary-Kate Sweeney made 10 saves to earn the win.
The Lions opened the scoring on a Kelly Bergersen goal at the 14:06 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Mercy answered with goals from Jaclyn Grzelaczyk, Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, Hansen and Moussa to take a 4-1 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter. Rugolo scored the final goal of the quarter to cut the Mavericks lead to two, 4-2, after one quarter.
Rugolo scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 4-3 with 12:05 left in the half. A Lopreato goal from Jaclyn Grzelaczyk made it 5-3 before a Hailey Dazzo goal got the hosts back to within one, 5-4, with 9:15 on the clock. Two goals from Moussa and a goal from Hansen and Erin Shimborske increased the Mavericks lead to 9-4 with two minutes left in the half. Amanda Weber scored the final goal of the quarter to trim Mercy's lead to 9-5 at halftime.
Molloy scored the first two goals of the third quarter to cut the Mavericks lead to two, 9-7, at the 9:22 mark. Rosenfeld and Lopreato scored back-to-back goals to close the quarter, giving Mercy an 11-7 lead after three quarters.
The Lions recorded the first four goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:13 remaining. Goals from Hansen and Rosenfeld gave the lead back to Mercy at 13-11 with 5:58 left to play in regulation. Molloy scored goals at the 4:46 mark and with 3:25 on the clock to tie the game at 13-13. The game remained tied at 13-13 after regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Molloy won the opening draw in overtime and later called a timeout. After a Dazzo shot went wide, Dazzo would score the game-winning goal at the 1:28 mark, off an assist from Rugolo, to give the Lions the 14-13 overtime win.
Mercy held a 36-32 edge in shots and a 30-16 edge in ground balls. Molloy held a 21-10 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 8th when they host STAC at 12 p.m.
