Seniors Lead Softball to Split With Molloy on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2023) – Powered by a home run in game one from senior Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra), the Mercy College softball team earned a 5-4 Senior Day win over ECC foe Molloy University before falling 7-2 in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend), Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial), Franck, Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley), Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption University), Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) and Bianca Mesadieu (Palm Bay, Fla./Eastern Florida State College) were recognized for their contributions to the program.

The Mavericks (12-28, 7-9 ECC) split their second straight doubleheader, while the Lions (24-15-1, 11-2-1 ECC) win the season series with Mercy.

Game 1: Mercy 5, Molloy 4

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University), sophomore Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) and freshman Cayla Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) led off the inning with singles to load the bases. Smart then singled home Sisco to make it 1-0. Sophomore Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0.

The Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Sisco singled and Seppala followed with a triple down the right field line, scoring Sisco to make it 3-0. Crawford then walked and would score on a Johnston RBI double to give Mercy a 4-0 lead.

The score remained 4-0 until the fourth inning when Franck led off the inning with a home run to right field to make it 5-0.

The Lions scored a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to cut Mercy's lead to one, 5-4.

Benson pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the game one win.

Sisco went 4-for-4 with two runs and Franck went 2-for-4 with her sixth home run of the season. Johnston went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smart went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Seppala went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Crawford went 1-for-3. Benson allowed four runs with four strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season.

Molloy was led by Steph Conrade who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Amanda King allowed two runs in 0.2 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 13 hits and no errors and Molloy had 12 hits and two errors.

Game 2: Molloy 7, Mercy 2

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sisco tripled to lead off the inning for her 100th career hit and later scored on a Franck RBI single to make it 1-0.

The Lions scored two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Mercy evened the score at 2-2 in the fifth inning when Sisco doubled home freshman Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) to tie the game.

Molloy scored five runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead.

The Mavericks could not score in the sixth or seventh innings giving Molloy the game two win.

Sisco went 2-for-3 with an RBI and now has 101 career hits. Franck went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Crawford went 1-for-3. Oquendo allowed seven earned runs in 5.2 innings to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Katie Hand who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brianna Macias allowed one earned run to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and one error and Molloy had 17 hits and one error.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville at 12 p.m.
