DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2023) – Powered by a combined 14 points from graduate student Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) on Senior Day, the No. 9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 24-10 win over ECC foe Molloy University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game seniors PJ Argiros (Levittown, N.Y./Nassau CC), Thomas Connors (Bellmore, N.Y./DeSales University), Mustapha Daffeh (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), Jake Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), Matt Gaughan (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey), Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), Gibbons, Kearnan, Jack Kipnes (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey), Omar Morris (Bronx, N.Y./Nassau CC) and Zack Higgins (Macungie, Pa./University of Hartford) were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (12-3, 6-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and have secured their fourth straight ECC Regular Season Championship. The 14-goal margin of victory is the largest over the Lions (9-8, 4-2 ECC) in 14 all-time meetings.
Senior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a game-high six goals and recorded his 100th career goal, becoming the ninth Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Gibbons had a career-high-tying seven points on four goals and three assists and Kearnan had two goals and five assists, including his 300th career point. Connors had two goals and two assists and juniors Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) and Greg Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and freshman Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) each had a goal and an assist. Junior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had three goals and juniors Damiano Ferrara (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and freshmen Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) and Ryken Kutner (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) each scored. Guglielmo had two assists and Gaughan, sophomore Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman Anthony Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each had an assist. Junior Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 11-of-15 on faceoffs with five ground balls and senior Justin Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) had seven ground balls and three causes turnovers. Kipnes had five ground balls and two caused turnovers, Fitzgerald had two caused turnovers and Higgins had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Argiros went 7-of-9 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Umano made seven saves in 48:10 minutes of action to earn the win. Tortorella made six saves in the final 11:50.
Molloy was led by Chris Delaney who had a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. Christian Michaels made 12 saves in 50:49 minutes of action to take the loss.
Duchnowski gave Mercy a 1-0 lead at the 13:09 mark of the first quarter. Jack Gibbons, Heyder, Calabria and Kearnan followed with four straight goals to give Mercy a 5-0 lead with 6:33 left in the quarter, leading to a Molloy timeout. Following the timeout, Heyder scored to make it 6-0 before Delaney scored for the Lions to make it 6-1 with three minutes remaining in the quarter. Calabria scored the final goal of the quarter off an assist from Jack Gibbons to give the Mavericks a 7-1 lead after one quarter.
Adam Hyman scored the first goal of the second quarter with 12:50 on the clock to make it 7-2. A goal from Jack Gibbons, back-to-back goals from Connors and a goal from Ferrara gave Mercy an 11-2 lead with 9:28 left in the half. A Patrick Dempsey goal at the 5:21 mark made it 11-3, but Heyder quickly answered off an assist from Caskenette to make it 12-3. Molloy scored the final goal of the half to make it 12-4 at halftime.
Kearnan and Jack Gibbons opened the scoring in the third quarter to make it 14-4 at the 9:54 mark. Back-to-back goals from Molloy cut Mercy's lead to 14-6 with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. Calabria scored the final goal of the quarter to give Mercy a 15-6 lead after three quarters.
Jack Gibbons and Heyder scored goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter to give Mercy a 17-6 lead. Two more goals from Heyder made it 19-6 with 10:44 remaining and Caskenette found the back of the net at the 9:29 mark to make it 20-6. Two straight goals from the Lions made it 20-8 with eight minutes left before Abrahall and Greg Gibbons scored consecutive goals to make it 22-8 with 4:43 remaining. Following a Molloy goal, DeMonte and Kutner scored to give Mercy a 24-9 lead with 2:14 left. Molloy scored a late goal to make it 24-10, but it was not enough and the Mavericks came away with the 24-10 Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 54-42 edge in shots, a 47-27 edge in ground balls and went 22-of-36 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, May 3rd when they host an ECC Championship Semifinal.
