Ten Mavericks Score as No. 20 Women's Lacrosse Earns 19-6 Senior Day Win Over Daemen

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2023) – Powered by 10 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 20 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 19-6 Senior Day and First Responders Day win over ECC foe Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University), Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield), Emma Rippon (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Iona University), Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Jaclyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./New York Tech), Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Gianna Mott (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and Jessica Denike (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Central Connecticut State University) were recognized for their contributions to the program.

The Mavericks (11-6, 5-1 ECC) end the regular season with five straight wins and earn a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship for the fourth straight season. The Wildcats (7-9, 2-4 ECC) end their inaugural season with two straight losses.

Sophomore Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a game-high five goals and sophomore Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had three goals and an assist. Rippon had two goals, six draw controls and a game-high four caused turnovers and junior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had two goals. Freshman Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a goal and two assists and Jaclyn Grzelaczyk had two goals and an assist. Erin Shimborske, Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, junior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) and freshman Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also scored. Junior Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had an assist and sophomore Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high eight draw controls with two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had five draw controls and junior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made two saves in the first half to earn the win. Freshman Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made three saves in the second half.

Daemen was led by Camryn Day and Casey Decatur who both had a team-high three goals. Blair Pfohl made five saves to take the loss.

Moussa opened the scoring less than 30 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. Rippon and Hansen followed with back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 3-0 lead with 13:45 left in the opening quarter. Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk made it 4-0 less than two minutes into the game. Rosenfeld and Hansen found the back of the net to make it 6-0 with 8:35 remaining before Decatur scored for the Wildcats to make it 6-1. Moussa, Erin Shimborske and Hansen closed the quarter with goals to give Mercy a 9-1 lead.

Zarou scored less than 30 seconds into the second quarter to make it 10-1. Rosenfeld, Rippon, Moussa and Jaclyn Grzelaczyk continued the onslaught with four more goals to give the Mavericks a commanding 14-1 lead with 5:14 left in the half. Decatur scored the final goal of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 14-2 at halftime.

Two goals from Moussa and a goal from Andrea Mott in the first five minutes of the third quarter gave Mercy a 17-2 lead. Jaclyn Grzelaczyk later made it 18-2 at the 6:50 mark before Day scored her first goal of the day with 3:30 on the clock to make it 18-3. Callow scored the final goal of the quarter, off an assist from Schreck, to give Mercy a 19-3 lead after three quarters.

Daemen scored all three goals in the fourth quarter to make it 19-6, but it was not enough and Mercy came away with the Senior Day win.

Mercy held a 33-14 edge in shots, a 14-12 edge in ground balls and a 20-10 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, May 4th when they host D'Youville in an ECC Championship Semifinal matchup at 12 p.m.
