Umano Makes Career-High-Tying 19 Saves as No. 7/8 Men's Lacrosse Earns 9-7 Win Over No. 12/16 Frostburg State

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2023) – Powered by a career-high-tying 19 saves from graduate student Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), the No. 7/8 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 9-7 win over ECC foe No. 12/16 Frostburg State University on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (9-2, 3-0 ECC) have won seven of their last eight games and have won 24 straight games against ECC competition. Mercy improves to 3-0 all-time against the Bobcats (9-2, 3-1 ECC).

Umano made a career-high-tying 19 saves to earn the win and senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had a game-high-tying four points on a game-high-tying three goals with one assist. Junior Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) scored a career-high two goals and went 9-of-12 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Senior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a goal and an assist and graduate students Thomas Connors (Bellmore, N.Y./DeSales University) and Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and junior Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) also scored. Junior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) added an assist and senior Justin Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) had two caused turnovers and six ground balls. Junior Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) had a game-high seven ground balls and now has 100 ground balls for his career.

Frostburg State was led by Jake Bowman who had a game-high-tying three goals. Mitch Meckley made 13 saves to take the loss.

The game remained scoreless until the 11:43 mark of the first quarter when Heyder scored to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Connors later made it 2-0 with 9:04 left in the opening quarter. Bowman got the Bobcats on the scoreboard with 5:44 remaining in the quarter to make it 2-1. Kuehner scored his first goal of the day on the ensuing faceoff to give Mercy a 3-1 lead. A Justin Hulse goal cut the Mavericks lead to 3-2 after the first quarter.

Kearnan found the back of the net for the first time at the 12:49 mark of the second quarter to give Mercy a 4-2 lead. Bowman answered just over a minute later to make it 4-3. The score remained 4-3 in favor of the Mavericks heading into halftime.

Gibbons scored a man-up goal with 8:17 on the clock to give Mercy a 5-3 lead in the third quarter. An Owen McCallum goal made it 5-4 with 3:26 left in the quarter. Kuehner again won the ensuing faceoff and scored to put the Mavericks up 6-4. McCallum scored the final goal of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 6-5 after the third quarter.

Kearnan scored less than a minute into the fourth quarter, off an assist from Calabria, to give Mercy a 7-5 lead. Austin Sipes scored at the 13:12 mark to once again make it a one-goal game at 7-6. Caskenette later scored a man-up goal from Heyder to give the Mavericks an 8-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Bowman later made it 8-7 with his third goal of the day with 8:31 left. Umano made three saves to keep the Bobcats from tying the game and Kearnan scored an insurance goal with 1:24 remaining to give the Mavericks a 9-7 lead. Mercy won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock to earn the win.

Shots were tied at 41-41, Mercy held a 36-28 edge in ground balls and the Mavericks went 14-of-19 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 15th when they play at UDC at 2 p.m.
