DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2024) – Despite a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds from senior Alex May (Englewood, N.J./St. Francis College (Brooklyn), the Mercy University men's basketball team dropped a 94-69 decision to ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (1-14, 0-5 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Saints (6-10, 3-2 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play.
Mercy was led by May who had a career-high 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor and 9-of-11 shooting from the foul line. The senior also had a game-high-tying seven rebounds with two assists. Junior Taj Chiles (Harlem, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) netted 14 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the foul line and dished out a team-high five assists. Graduate student Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds and senior Jayden Dewaal (Toronto, Ontario/Trinidad State Junior College) had eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sean Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) added eight points and four rebounds and sophomore Asa Kone (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy for Young Men) and freshman Derek Long (Milford, Conn./Deerfield Academy) contributed two points. Sophomore Robert Zmujdzin (Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) scored a point and had a block off the bench.
D'Youville was led by Trayton Trice who had a game-high 22 points.
Chiles scored the opening basket of the game to give Mercy their lone lead of the game at 2-0 with 19:25 left in the opening half. The Saints answered with a 15-3 run to take a 15-5 lead with 15:01 remaining in the first half. A Kirkland three and Dewaal layup cut the D'Youville lead to three, 20-17, at the 6:41 mark.
The Saints rallied with the next eight points to increase the lead to 11, 28-17, with 5:00 on the clock. A Kone free throw made it 28-18, but D'Youville went on an 8-2 run to increase the lead to 16, 36-20, with 34 seconds left in the half. A late Dewaal jumper cut the Saints lead to 14, 36-22, at halftime.
D'Youville opened the second half with two Trice free throws to make it 38-22. A May three-point play and Dewaal layup got the Mavericks to within 11, 38-27, at the 18:03 mark. The Saints went on an 11-3 run to build the lead to 19, 49-30, with 15:43 left before a Conroy layup at the 10:31 mark cut the D'Youville lead to 13, 58-45.
The Saints ensued with a 13-3 run to put the lead to 23, 71-48, with 7:30 remaining. D'Youville led by double-digits the rest of the way and earned the 94-69 win.
Mercy shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from downtown and 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the foul line. D'Youville shot 50.0 percent (36-of-72) from the field, 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from beyond the arc and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the charity stripe. D'Youville held a 42-37 edge on the glass.
