DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2024) – Powered by a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds and the go-ahead basket with 14 seconds left from junior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam), the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a 57-55 win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (10-6, 3-2 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play and improve to 5-0 at home this season. Mercy is now 3-0 all-time against the Saints (5-10, 3-2 ECC) at home and have now recorded double-digit wins in three straight seasons for the first time since they had six straight seasons of 10 or more wins from 1987-93.
Mercy was led by Stanavich who had a game-high 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting in 40 minutes with a game-high nine rebounds. Graduate student Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded 10 points, four assists and a game-high four steals and sophomore Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) netted seven points and two blocks. Junior Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) had six points and freshman Molly Boek (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) had a career-high six points. Senior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) added two points, six rebounds and three assists and sophomore Kyla Nembach (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) chipped in two points.
D'Youville was led by Stella Mollica who had a team-high 12 points.
The Saints took an early 4-0 lead before Mercy rallied with a 6-0 run to take a 6-4 lead after a Stanavich layup with 4:45 left in the first quarter. D'Youville later evened the score at 10-10 before a Stanavich layup gave the Mavericks a 12-10 lead after the first quarter.
Mercy opened the second quarter on a 16-1 run to take their largest lead of the game, 28-11, with 3:51 left in the half following another Stanavich bucket. A three from Sofie Fuglsang made it 28-14, but a Wall layup and free throw increased the lead back to 17, 31-14, with 1:32 on the clock. A Brianne Moxley layup in the final minute of play cut the Mavericks lead to 15, 31-16, at halftime.
The Mavericks held a 33-21 lead with 7:58 left in the third quarter after a Barrera layup. The Saints went on a 6-0 run to trim Mercy's lead to six, 33-27, at the 6:18 mark. A Halvorsen three on the next Mavericks possession increased the lead back to nine, 36-27, and a Stanavich layup with 3:17 on the clock gave Mercy a 39-29 advantage. D'Youville netted the next five points to make it 39-34 before a Nembach jumper gave the Mavericks a 41-34 lead after three quarters.
D'Youville began the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 44-41 lead with 6:47 remaining, forcing a Mercy timeout. After the timeout, Boek and Mollica traded baskets to give the Saints a 46-43 edge with 5:13 on the clock. Halvorsen drained another big three on the next Mercy possession to tie the game at 46-46. A Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott jumper at the 4:31 mark gave D'Youville the lead back at 48-46. However, Stanavich stepped up and nailed a trifecta to put the Mavericks ahead 49-48 with 4:12 remaining. Another Vleer-Elliott layup made it 50-49 in favor of D'Youville, but Stanavich connected on another three to give Mercy a 52-50 lead with 3:12 left. Two Saints free throws tied the game at 52-52 before a Stanavich layup gave the Mavericks a 54-52 lead with 1:22 on the clock. A Mollica three-point play with 31 seconds left gave the visitors a 55-54 advantage. After a Mercy timeout, Stanavich connected on a jumper in the paint with 14 seconds on the clock to give the Mavericks a 56-55 lead. D'Youville called timeout to advance the ball and Wall came up with a steal on a jump ball, giving Mercy possession with two seconds left. Wall went 1-of-2 from the line to make it 57-55 and a last second three-point attempt by Fuglsang would not fall, giving the Mavericks the 57-55 win.
Mercy shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from downtown and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the foul line. D'Youville shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from the charity stripe. D'Youville held a 31-28 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, January 21st when they host Daemen at 12 p.m.
