Wall and Stanavich Combine for 38 Points as Women's Basketball Earns 67-50 Win Over UDC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2024) – Powered by a combined 38 points from graduate student Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and junior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam), the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a 67-50 win over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

The Mavericks (11-8, 4-4 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and defeat the Firebirds (13-7, 5-3 ECC) at home for the third straight time. Mercy held UDC to a season-low 50 points and the 17-point margin of victory is the largest margin of victory all-time against the Firebirds.

Mercy was led by Wall who had a game-high 20 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor and 8-of-8 shooting from the foul line. The graduate student added five assists and five rebounds. Stanavich netted 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals and sophomore Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Megan Marcotte (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) chipped in five points and four rebounds and sophomore Kyla Nembach (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) contributed four points. Freshman Molly Boek (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) scored three points and senior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose), junior Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) and freshman Amani Abuhatab (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) all scored two points.

UDC was led by Destiny Ryles who had a team-high 16 points.

Barrera gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead at the 8:47 mark of the first quarter before a Latavia Jackson layup tied the game at 2-2. Mercy scored five points in a row to take a 7-2 lead with 4:18 left in the quarter after a Stanavich layup. UDC rallied and cut the Mavericks lead to one, 9-8, with 1:25 on the clock. An Abuhatab jumper and two Tedesco free throws gave Mercy a 13-8 lead after the first quarter.

Two free throws from Wall and a Stanavich layup increased the Mavericks lead to nine, 17-8, at the 9:19 mark of the second quarter. A Nia Ford three made it 17-11 before Mercy went on a 21-5 run, finished off by a Wall three, to take a 38-16 lead with 1:01 left in the half. A late Ryles three cut the Mavericks lead to 19, 40-21, at halftime.

The Firebirds opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the Mavericks lead to 11, 40-29, at the 6:28 mark, forcing a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks answered back with a 10-2 run, capped off by a Stanavich layup, to increase the lead back to 19, 50-31, with 3:30 left in the quarter. Two Ford free throws at the end of the quarter cut Mercy's lead to 16, 52-36, after three quarters.

Mercy opened the fourth quarter on a 15-7 run to take their largest lead of the game, 67-43, with 2:39 remaining after two Stanavich free throws. UDC scored the final seven points of the game to make it 67-50, but it was not enough, and the Mavericks earned the 67-50 win.

Mercy shot 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor, 30.0 percent (3-of-10) from downtown and 87.0 percent (20-of-23) from the foul line. UDC shot 27.7 percent (18-of-65) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 48-31 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 31st when they play at Queens at 5:30 p.m.
