Hanken Tjostheim, Holland and Sas Score as No. 20 Men's Soccer Earns 4-1 Win Over AIC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2024) – Powered by goals from junior Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) and seniors Julian Holland (Tokyo, Japan/Iowa Western CC) and Antonio Sas (San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina/Alliance University), the No. 20 Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 4-1 win over American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (6-1-4) bounce back from their first loss of the season and defeat the Yellow Jackets (0-6-3) for the first time since 2022. AIC suffers their first loss by more than one goal this season. The win is Head Coach Pedro Velazquez's 85th career win as head coach.

Mercy was led by Hanken Tjostheim who scored a game-high two goals and added an assist. He now has 15 goals, four assists and 34 points. Holland scored his second goal of the season and Sas added his first goal of the season and two assists. Junior Hugo Martin (Malaga, Spain/Rogers State University) recorded an assist and senior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made one save to earn the win.

AIC was led by Pietro Botasso who scored and by Lucas Morales-Fernandez who made four saves to take the loss.

Morales-Fernandez made three saves and Elvestad stopped one shot in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

Mercy ended the scoreless tie when Holland headed in a Sas corner kick in the 48th minute to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Hanken Tjostheim made it 2-0 in the 58th minute following another Sas assist.

Hanken Tjostheim gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead in the 69th minute following a pass from Martin and Sas capped off the scoring for Mercy in the 75th minute, off an assist from Hanken Tjostheim, making it 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets ended the shutout with a goal in the 80th minute to make it 4-1. Mercy cruised the rest of the way, earning the 4-1 win.

Mercy held a 12-11 edge in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 2-2.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, October 20th when they host #6 Southern New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
