ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2024) – Powered by goals from juniors Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) and Hugo Martin (Malaga, Spain/Rogers State University), the No. 14 Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against ECC foe Molloy University on Wednesday night at John A. Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (4-0-3, 2-0-2 ECC) remain unbeaten overall and in ECC play. Mercy earns a tie in the regular season against the Lions (3-4-1, 1-0-1 ECC) for the first time since 2013.
Mercy was led by Hanken Tjostheim who recorded his team-leading 11th goal of the season and now has a team-high 24 points on the year. Martin netted his third goal of the season and junior Santiago Serrano (Bogota, Colombia/Rogers State University) dished out his second assist of the year. Senior Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio del Verbo Divino) added his third assist of the year and senior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made three saves to earn the tie.
Molloy was led by Matt Star and Michael Hofmann who both scored. Callum Hunt made a game-high eight saves to earn the draw.
Both goalkeepers made saves in the first 15 minute of action to keep the game scoreless. The Lions got on the scoreboard first in the 30th minute when Star scored, off an assist from Steph Maurice, to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Hunt made two more saves to close the half, giving Molloy a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Hunt made another save in the 52nd minute to keep it 1-0. Hanken Tjostheim tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute when he fired home a Penafiel free kick from 35 yards out.
The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into the final10 minutes of play. Martin gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute with a shot from the right side of the box, following a pass from Serrano. Mercy held a 2-1 lead until the 88th minute when Hofmann scored to tie the game at 2-2. Serrano, Hanken Tjostheim and freshman Herman Borke (Nesoeya, Norway/Doenski Videregaaende Skole) all had shots stopped by Hunt in the final two minutes of play and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Mercy held a 19-8 edge in shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 5th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
