AMHERST, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2024) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring, the No. 20 Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 4-0 win over ECC foe Daemen University on Saturday afternoon at Karrer Field.
The Mavericks (7-2-5, 4-0-3 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play and improve to 11-0 all-time against the Wildcats (3-8-2, 0-6-1 ECC). Mercy has secured their sixth ECC Championship berth in seven seasons.
Mercy was led by junior Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) who recorded his team-leading 17th goal and fifth assist. He now has a team-high 39 points on the year. Freshman Herman Borke (Nesoeya, Norway/Doenski Videregaaende Skole) added his second goal of the season and first collegiate assist. Junior Santiago Serrano (Bogota, Colombia/Rogers State University) netted his second goal of the year and junior Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) tallied his fourth goal of the year. Graduate student Benjamin Van Buren (Anderson, S.C./USC Upstate), seniors Julian Holland (Tokyo, Japan/Iowa Western CC) and Juan Jose Alvarez Acosta (Medellin, Colombia/St. Andrews University) and junior Matteo Azambuja (Paris, France/Eastern New Mexico University) each added an assist. Senior Simon Steffensen (Aalborg, Denmark/Aalborghus Gymnasium) made two saves to earn the shutout win in his first start of the season.
Daemen was led by Arturo Bustamante who made a game-high 13 saves to take the loss.
Bustamante stopped three shots in the first 25 minutes of play, including a Hanken Tjostheim penalty kick to keep the game scoreless. Bustamante made another save in the 28th minute before Serrano gave Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute, following assists from Hanken Tjostheim and Holland. Bustamante stopped four more shots in the half and Steffensen made a late save in the first half to keep Mercy's lead at 1-0 at halftime.
Borke gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute following assists from Alvarez Acosta and Van Buren. Hanken Tjostheim found the back of the net in the 54th minute to make it 3-0 following a Borke assist.
Bacigalupo capped off the scoring for Mercy in the 74th minute when he scored following an assist from Azambuja to make it 4-0.
Steffensen made a final save in the 79th minute to preserve the shutout, giving Mercy the 4-0 win.
Mercy held a 33-5 edge in shots and a 17-2 edge in shots on goal. Mercy also held a 13-0 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 30th when they play at Wilmington at 3:30 p.m.
