DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2024) – Despite a goal from senior Jessica Evans (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) and a career-high 20 saves from senior Alexandra Giordano (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor), the Mercy University field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to NE10 foe No. 10 Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-10, 3-9 NE10) have dropped nine of their last 10 games and fall to the Hawks (13-4, 10-2 NE10) for the 10th straight time.
Mercy was led by Evans who scored her second goal of the season. Giordano made a game-high 20 saves to take the loss. Junior Samantha Trickel (Ottsville, Pa./Palisades) recorded her first assist of the year and junior Reagan Lane (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), freshman Eunice Santiago (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and graduate student Kasey Volz (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) each had a defensive save.
Saint Anselm was led by Maggie Burchill who recorded a game-high two goals. Sidney Falterer made two saves to earn the win.
After Mercy recorded the first two shots on goal of the game, Saint Anselm scored in the 5th minute when Maddie Davis deflected in a shot attempt to make it 1-0. The Mavericks quickly tied the game up at 1-1 in the 7th minute when Trickel found Evans in front of the goal and Evans made her way around a charging Falterer, firing the ball into the cage to tie the game. Giordano made two saves to keep the score tied at 1-1 after the first quarter.
Burchill gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with her first goal of the game in the 18th minute. Giordano made six more saves in the half to keep the Mavericks down just one, 2-1, at halftime.
Ava Rayfield made it 3-1 in the 33rd minute following a Millie Forster assist. Giordano stopped six more shots to send Mercy into the fourth quarter down, 3-1.
Giordano recorded five more saves in the fourth quarter before Burchill scored on a penalty stroke to make it 4-1. The Hawks led the rest of the way to earn the 4-1 win.
Saint Anselm held a 30-6 edge in shots and a 27-3 edge in shots on goal. The Hawks held a 13-1 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, November 1st when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 6 p.m.
