ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2024) – Despite a goal from senior Amiah Washington (Clifton, N.J./University of Bridgeport) and seven saves from freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the No. 4 seeded Mercy University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to No. 1 seeded Molloy University in an ECC Women's Soccer Championship Semifinal on Sunday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (10-8-2) see their season end in the Semifinals for the second straight year, while the Lions (11-4-2) advance to the Final for the fifth straight season.
Mercy was led by Washington who recorded her seventh goal of the season. Becker made seven saves to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Mikaela Barriga and Isabella Muro who both scored. Elyse Munoz made a game-high eight saves to earn the win.
Becker made three early saves to keep the game scoreless until Washington scored in the 30th minute on a penalty kick to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Becker made three more saves to close out the half, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Muro tied the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute following a Mercy foul in the box. Becker stopped another shot to keep the game tied, but the Lions took a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute following a Barriga penalty kick.
Mercy forced Munoz to make four more saves but could not find the equalizer and Molloy came away with the 2-1 win.
Molloy held a 14-12 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 9-9. Corner kicks were tied at 4-4.
