DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2024) – Powered by four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a 68-50 win over Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (5-4) have won two games in a row and four of their last five games. Mercy defeats the Lightning (1-8) for the first time since 2022.
Mercy was led by senior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) who had a game-high 16 points with five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Amani Abuhatab (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) added 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds and junior Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) contributed 14 points and a game-high-tying eight rebounds with a game-high four blocks. Sophomore Molly Boek (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) recorded 11 points and seven rebounds and senior Kayla Halvorsen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) finished with five points. Sophomore Grace Lesko (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) had four points and a game-high-tying eight rebounds and sophomore Paige Fourtin (Ansonia, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) netted two points. Freshman Gabrielle Martin (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) recorded her first collegiate point.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Katie Yoder who had a team-high 14 points.
Goldey-Beacom held a 10-7 lead with 5:21 left in the first quarter before Mercy stormed back on an 11-2 run to take an 18-12 lead after an Abuhatab jumper with 1:23 on the clock. The Mavericks headed into the second quarter with a 22-17 lead after two Barrera free throws.
Mercy opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 29-19 lead after a Fourtin layup with 4:29 left in the half. A Karlee Lemon layup made it 29-21 before two free throws from Barrera and Abuhatab gave Mercy a 12-point lead, 33-21, with 2:31 remaining in the half. Two Boek free throws at the 1:06 mark gave the Mavericks a 35-23 lead before Goldey-Beacom ended the half on a 6-2 spurt to cut Mercy's lead to eight, 37-29, at halftime.
A Rory Ciszkowski three at the 8:06 mark of the third quarter cut Mercy's lead to six, 40-34. The Mavericks followed with a 7-2 run to increase the lead back to 11, 47-36, after an Abuhatab layup with 5:01 left in the quarter. The Lightning later cut the Mercy lead to eight, 50-42, but a Halvorsen layup right before the end of the quarter gave the Mavericks a 52-42 lead after three quarters.
Mercy began the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 59-44 lead after a Stanavich layup with 6:35 left. A Lemon three made it 59-47 before the Mavericks scored nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 68-47, after a Martin free throw with 15 seconds left. A late Janie Cross three made it 68-50, but the Mavericks earn the impressive 68-50 win.
Mercy shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor, 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from downtown and 57.1 percent (20-of-35) from the foul line. Goldey-Beacom shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from beyond the arc and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 46-37 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, December 13th when they play at D'Youville at 5:30 p.m.
