Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Cruises to 73-47 Win Over Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2024) – Powered by four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a convincing 73-47 win over ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

The Mavericks (13-8, 6-4 ECC) have won three games in a row and improve to 7-1 at home this season. Mercy defeats the Lions (8-12, 3-7 ECC) for the third straight time and the 26-point margin of victory is the Mavericks largest over Molloy since a 32-point win in 2001.

Mercy was led by graduate student Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) who had a game-high 23 points and seven assists with five steals. Junior Jaclyn Stanavich (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) added 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting and a game-high six steals with four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Sophomore Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) recorded a double-double by way of 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with a game-high-tying three blocks. Senior Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) chipped in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with four assists and sophomore Kyla Nembach (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) scored three points. Sophomore Megan Marcotte (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) produced two points and three steals and freshman Amani Abuhatab (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) had one point.

Molloy was led by Trinity Hudson who had a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-0 lead following a Stanavich layup with 7:54 left in the first quarter and did not look back, never trailing in the game. A Nembach three at the 2:40 mark gave Mercy a 13-6 lead. The Lions ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 13-13 after one quarter of play.

Stanavich, Wall and Tedesco opened the second quarter with three straight baskets to give Mercy a 19-13 lead with 8:26 left in the half. A Hudson three made it 19-16, but the Mavericks closed the quarter on a 16-4 run to take a 35-20 lead at halftime following a Stanavich jumper.

A Hudson trifecta with 7:28 left in the third quarter cut Mercy's lead to 12, 37-25. The Mavericks ensued with a 12-6 run, finished off by a Barrera free throw, to take a 49-31 lead at the 1:45 mark. Mercy headed into the fourth quarter with an 18-point lead, 51-33, after a Barrera jumper.

The Mavericks opened the fourth quarter on a 19-7 run to build their lead to a game-high 30 points, 70-40, with 2:26 remaining. The Lions ended the game on a 7-3 run, but it was not enough, and Mercy earned the convincing 73-47 win.

Mercy shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the floor, 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from downtown and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the foul line. Molloy shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the foul line. Mercy held a 37-36 edge on the glass. The Mavericks forced 29 Molloy turnovers to hold a 31-12 edge in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, February 9th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
