Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2024) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy University men's basketball team dropped an 84-68 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Friday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.

The Mavericks (1-20, 0-11 ECC) have dropped 10 games in a row and fall to the Redhawks (8-9, 5-4 ECC) for the seventh straight time.

Mercy was led by sophomore Sean Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) who had a team-high 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from downtown. Graduate student Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) added 13 points and senior Alex May (Englewood, N.J./St. Francis College (Brooklyn) had 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior Taj Chiles (Harlem, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) recorded 12 points and a game-high six assists and sophomore Asa Kone (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy for Young Men) chipped in eight points and six rebounds. Senior Jay Turner (Waterbury, Conn./Notre Dame West Haven Prep) contributed eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Kevin Constant who had a game-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 13-9 lead with 12:25 left in the first half, following a May three. The Redhawks answered with an 11-0 run to take a 20-13 lead at the 7:59 mark of the opening half. After a Mercy timeout, the Mavericks went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 22-22 with 6:04 on the clock after a Kone dunk.

After a Roberts Wesleyan timeout, the visitors went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 30-22 with 3:33 remaining in the half. A Turner layup with 1:56 on the clock cut the Mercy deficit to five, 34-29, but the guests ended the half on a 6-2 spurt to head into halftime with a 40-31 lead.

The Redhawks began the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 46-31 lead with 18:23 left. Mercy rallied with a 9-2 run, finished off by two Turner free throws, to cut the Roberts Wesleyan lead to single digits, 48-40, with 15:37 on the clock. A Chiles trifecta at the 13:25 mark got Mercy back to within eight, 55-47. However, the visitors scored the next four points to take a 59-47 lead with 11:35 remaining.

A Kirkland layup with 7:26 left to play cut the Redhawks lead to six, 63-57. Back-to-back baskets from Marlon Pratt Jr. made it 67-57 before Conroy nailed a three to get Mercy to within seven, 67-60, at the 6:11 mark. After a Roberts Wesleyan timeout, the Redhawks went on a 9-1 run to build the lead back to 15, 76-61, with 4:09 left. A Conroy three with 1:04 left made it 80-68 in favor of the Redhawks. Roberts Wesleyan scored the final four points of the game at the foul line to earn the 84-68 win.

Mercy shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor, 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from downtown and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 45.8 percent (33-of-72) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from beyond the arc and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the charity stripe. Roberts Wesleyan held a 48-35 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Chris Watts and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, February 16th when they play at D'Youville at 8 p.m.
