Gibbons Records Game-High Five Points as No. 9 Men's Lacrosse Earns 13-11 Win at No. 13 Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Mar. 10, 2024) – Powered by a game-high five points from senior Greg Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), the No. 9 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 13-11 win at No. 13 Seton Hill University on Sunday afternoon at DSG Field.

The Mavericks (5-1) bounce back from their first loss of the season and defeat the Griffins (3-2) for the fourth straight time.

Mercy was led by Gibbons who had two goals and three assists and by senior Brody Caskenette (Owen Sound, Ontario/Owen Sound District Secondary School) who had a game-high-tying three goals with one assist. Senior Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) had two goals and two assists and graduate student TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) added two goals and freshman Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also scored. Sophomore Matthew Kramer (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) scored his first collegiate goal and had two caused turnovers and sophomore AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had one assist. Senior Tyler Pjatak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) had a game-high three caused turnovers with four ground balls and graduate student Justin Gerdvil (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a game-high six ground balls. Senior Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 7-of-18 on faceoffs with five ground balls and sophomore Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 6-of-7 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Junior Ryan Resnick (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) went 2-of-3 on faceoffs with one ground ball and freshman Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made a game-high 11 saves to earn his fifth win of the season.

Seton Hill was led by Carter Green who had a game-high-tying three goals. Will Cody made 10 saves to take the loss.

Bergersen gave Mercy a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game after an assist from Calabria. The Griffins scored the final four goals of the quarter to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

Caskenette and Duchnowski scored back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the second quarter to cut Seton Hill's lead to one, 4-3. Peyton Gensler made it 5-3 at the 12:59 mark before two straight goals from Caskenette and Calabria tied the game at 5-5 with 7:42 left in the half. A Demetri Yerou goal gave the Griffins a 6-5 lead with 4:16 on the clock before Kramer scored his first goal to tie the game at 6-6 less than a minute later. Connor Zostant scored the final goal of the quarter with 1:11 on the clock to give the hosts a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Heyder and Gibbons scored the first two goals of the third quarter to give Mercy the lead back at 8-7 at the 10:47 mark. Seton Hill rallied and netted three unanswered goals to take a 10-8 lead with 4:24 remaining in the quarter. Heyder and Gibbons scored the final two goals of the quarter in the final 1:24 to tie the game at 10-10 after three quarters.

Caskenette and Nate Herbster traded goals to make it 11-11 with 9:48 remaining. Calabria put the Mavericks ahead for good with 8:49 on the clock after an assist from Gibbons, making it 12-11. Duchnowski added a man-up goal from Heyder with 5:52 left to make it 13-11 and the Mavericks defense held Seton Hill scoreless in the final 9:48 to earn the big 13-11 road win.

Seton Hill held a 38-35 edge in shots, Mercy held a 31-23 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 15-of-28 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 16th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
