MELBOURNE, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2024) – Despite three different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Franklin Pierce University before falling 10-2 to University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (2-6) end their Florida trip with two losses, while the Ravens (4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak and the Prairie Stars (14-8) have won five of their last six games.
Game 1: Franklin Pierce 4, Mercy 3
The Ravens took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and added a run in the third and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead.
Mercy scored three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. Graduate student Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) singled to lead off the inning and graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) walked. After junior Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) pinch ran for Smart, sophomore Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) singled home Lula to make it 3-1. Franck and Stark later scored after senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) reached on an error by the shortstop, tying the game at 3-3.
Franklin Pierce scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead and Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Ravens the game one win.
Stark went 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and Smart both went 1-for-3. Graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed one earned run in four innings to take a no-decision. Graduate student Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) allowed one run in two innings to take the loss.
Franklin Pierce was led by Bella Williams who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kennedy Morris earned the win in the circle.
Mercy had three hits and two errors and Franklin Pierce had four hits and one error.
Game 2: Illinois Springfield 10, Mercy 2
The Prairie Stars scored four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Mercy scored both of their runs in the third inning to make it 4-2. Murphy led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Smart RBI groundout to make it 4-1. Sophomore Delaney Baker (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) then singled home freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) who singled earlier in the inning to make it 4-2.
Illinois Springfield scored two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. Mercy could not score in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Prairie Stars the 10-2 win via the run-rule.
Baker went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Miller went 1-for-1 with a run. Murphy went 2-for-3 with a run and junior Zoe Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-2. Benson allowed one earned run in 4.0 innings to take the loss.
Illinois Springfield was led by Olivia DeLuca who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Alexis Carroll pitched four innings to earn the win.
Mercy had five hits and seven errors and Illinois Springfield had seven hits and two errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, March 17th when they play at Georgian Court 12 p.m.
