BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Mar. 16, 2024) – Despite a game-high four points from graduate student Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield), the No. 17 Mercy University women's lacrosse team dropped a 10-6 decision to Bloomsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Mavericks (1-5) have dropped four games in a row, while the Huskies (4-0) remain undefeated on the year.
Mercy was led by Corley who had four points on two goals and two assists and by senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) who had two goals. Sophomore Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and senior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) also scored and junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had two assists. Sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also had an assist and junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high six caused turnovers and six draw controls with five ground balls. Freshman Juliana Talenti (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had three caused turnovers and four ground balls and senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) played the first half in goal and allowed four goals with two saves to take the loss. Sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made five saves in the second half.
Bloomsburg was led by Kayla Stressman who had a game-high three goals. Lauren Foley made a game-high 15 saves to earn the win.
The game remained scoreless until the 6:23 mark of the first quarter when Rosenfeld scored following an assist from Callow to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. A Brianna Austin goal with 33 seconds left in the quarter tied the game at 1-1 heading into the second quarter.
The Huskies scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead with 13:41 left in the half. Rosenfeld netted her second goal of the day at the 12:04 mark to make it 3-2. A Madison Coyle goal with 2:53 on the clock made it 4-2. Corley scored the final goal of the quarter with 20 seconds left, off an assist from Moussa, to send the teams into halftime with Bloomsburg holding a 4-3 lead.
Bloomsburg tallied the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 6-3 lead with 6:37 on the clock. After a Mercy timeout, Corley scored again following an assist from Moussa to make it 6-4 at the 4:58 mark. The Huskies answered with the final two goals of the quarter to take an 8-4 lead after three quarters.
Mott made it 8-5 with 12:15 left to play, but the Huskies netted the next two goals to take their largest lead of the game, 10-5, with 7:08 remaining. Zarou scored a goal at the 4:06 mark to make it 10-6, but the Mavericks could not score again, and Bloomsburg earned the 10-6 win.
Mercy held a 36-22 edge in shots, a 29-26 edge in ground balls and a 12-8 edge in draw controls.
