Hansen Records Game-High Seven Points as RV Women's Lacrosse Earns 15-8 Win Over Jefferson

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2024) – Powered by a game-high seven points from junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields), the RV Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a 15-8 win over Jefferson University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-6) have won three games in a row and defeat the Rams (4-4) for the eighth straight time.

Mercy was led by Hansen who had a game-high five goals with two assists. Graduate student Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) had three goals and senior Brooke Zarou (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island University) had two goals. Junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a goal and two assists and sophomore Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a game-high three assists. Senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a goal and an assist, recording her 100th career point. Senior Chrisina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), graduate student Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and junior Isabelle Palladino (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) also scored. Sophomore Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had an assist and graduate student Ryan Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./Molloy University) had a game-high five caused turnovers and six ground balls. Junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high nine draw controls with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made three saves in the first half and sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made two saves in the second half to earn the win.

Jefferson was led by Gabby Modzelewski who had a team-high-tying four points on two goals and two assists. Kalyn Ammerlaan made 14 saves to take the loss.

Jefferson scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead with 3:40 left in the first quarter. A Corley goal with 2:16 on the clock from Callow made it 2-1 and the Rams headed into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead.

A Zarou goal from Mott with 12:07 left in the half tied the game at 2-2. Jefferson recorded the next three goals to take their largest lead of the game, 5-2, at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter. Lopreato and Hansen scored the final two goals of the half to cut Jefferson's lead to one, 5-4, at halftime.

A Hansen goal just over a minute into the third quarter tied the game at 5-5. Zarou gave the Mavericks a 6-5 lead at the 12:01 mark following a Rosenfeld assist. Rosenfeld, Hansen, and Corley ended the quarter with goals to give Mercy a 9-5 lead after three quarters.

A Shimborske goal from Mott at the 11:12 mark of the fourth quarter made it 10-5. A Carina Raymond goal with 11:00 left ended the Mavericks 8-0 run from the second quarter, making it 10-6. Hansen and Corley put an end to any hope of a Jefferson comeback with consecutive goals to put the Mavericks up, 12-6, with 7:01 left. The Rams made it 12-7 with 6:09 remaining before goals from Moussa, Palladino and Hansen gave Mercy a game-high eight-goal lead, 15-7, with 4:01 remaining. A late goal by Jefferson was not enough and the Mavericks earned the 15-8 win.

Mercy held a 37-16 edge in shots, a 29-17 edge in ground balls and a 17-10 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 3rd when they host Pace at 3 p.m.
