ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2024) – Powered by the game-winning goal from senior Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a 15-14 win at Dominican University on Wednesday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
The Mavericks (7-8) have won three games in a row and snap the Chargers (12-3) 10-game winning streak.
Mercy was led by Corley who had three goals and an assist and by junior Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) who had a game-high six points on a game-high-tying four goals with two assists. Junior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) also had a game-high-tying four goals and freshman Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored two goals. Sophomores Andrea Mott (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Maeghan Callow (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also scored and graduate student Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and senior Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out an assist. Junior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a team-high six draw controls and senior Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) played 41:22 minutes in goal with two saves to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia LaMonica (Jefferson Township, N.J./Jefferson Township) made one save in 18:38 minutes of action.
Dominican was led by Madelyn Grella who had a team-high five points on four goals and an assist. Kristinamarie Kaszovitz made 11 saves in 47:32 minutes of action to take the loss.
Mott gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game and Hansen made it 2-0 with her first goal of the day at the 12:16 mark. A Grella goal made it 2-1 with 11:17 on the clock before three straight goals from Corley, Moussa and Wallace gave the Mavericks a 5-1 lead with 5:09 left in the first quarter. After a Dominican timeout, the Chargers scored to make it 5-2 before Hansen closed the quarter with a free position goal to give Mercy a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.
A Grace DeStasio goal to open the second quarter made it 6-3 before two straight goals from Hansen gave the Mavericks an 8-3 lead with 10:40 left in the half. A Sydney Strohmayer goal made it 8-4 before two goals from Moussa and another from Corley gave Mercy a game-high seven goal lead, 11-4, at the 4:38 mark. Dominican scored the final two goals of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to five, 11-6, at halftime.
Grella opened the third quarter with a goal 35 seconds into the half to make it 11-7. The Chargers scored all six goals in the quarter to take a 12-11 lead after three quarters.
Moussa evened the score at 12-12 with a goal at the 14:15 mark of the fourth quarter. Ellie Brouwer scored less than a minute later to give Dominican a 13-12 lead with 13:39 left. The Chargers maintained a one-goal lead until Wallace tied the game on a woman-down goal with 8:18, making it 13-13. DeStasio gave Dominican the lead again with 6:03 left, giving the hosts a 14-13 lead. Mercy continued to battle, and Callow tied the game at 14-14 following a woman-up free position goal with 2:59 remaining. Callow won the ensuing draw control, and a Moussa shot was stopped by Kaszovitz with 1:58 left before Corley scooped up the rebound and fired the ball into the net to give Mercy a 15-14 lead with 1:56 on the clock. The Mavericks defense forced a Dominican turnover after the Chargers won the ensuing draw control and Mercy ran out the clock to earn the 15-14 road win.
Mercy held a 36-26 edge in shots and a 23-15 edge in ground balls. Dominican held a 19-13 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 26th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
