Four Mavericks Record an RBI as Softball Hosts Caldwell

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2024) – Despite four Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University softball team dropped 8-5 and 2-1 decisions to Caldwell University on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (13-25) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Cougars (25-21) have won five of their last six games.

Game 1: Caldwell 8, Mercy 5

After a scoreless first inning, Caldwell scored a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Mercy tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. Freshman Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led off the inning with a single and stole second before later scoring on a throwing error by the first baseman after a freshman Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) foul out to first base.

The Cougars scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2. Reyer singled and stole second before scoring on a Murphy RBI single with two outs.

Caldwell added two more runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Mavericks made it 8-3 in the fifth inning. Freshman Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.

The score remained 8-3 until the bottom of the seventh when Mercy scored two runs to make it 8-5. Graduate student Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) then singled home freshman Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) to make it 8-4. Reyer later drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 8-5. A popup and groundout ended the game with the bases loaded.

Mercy was led by Murphy who went 2-for-5 with an RBI and by Reyer who went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) went 2-for-5 and Miller went 2-for-4. Franck went 1-for-2 and Stark went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Marina Provencio (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) allowed six earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss. Graduate student Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) allowed no runs in two innings.

Caldwell was led by Grace Vondracek who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Katie O'Connor pitched a complete game to earn the win.  

Mercy had 10 hits and four errors and Caldwell had 11 hits and two errors.

Game 2: Caldwell 2, Mercy 1

Caldwell scored two unearned runs in the top of the second on a Brooke Freschi two-run single to make it 2-0.

Mercy answered with a run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1. Franck led off the inning with a single and moved to second after a junior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) sacrifice bunt. Franck later moved to third after a groundout before sophomore Daedra VanLuvanee (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton Area) singled home Franck to make it 2-1.

Mercy was unable to score again, giving Caldwell the 2-1 win.

Mercy was led by VanLuvanee who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and by Sisco who went 2-for-3. Seppala went 1-for-2 and Miller and Franck both went 1-for-3. Oquendo allowed two unearned runs in four innings to take the loss. Graduate student Alexi Benson (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) tossed three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts.

Caldwell was led by Freschi who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and by Allison Winters who tossed four innings to earn the win. O'Connor pitched the final three innings to earn the save.

Mercy had six hits and two errors and Caldwell had four hits and no errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 25th when they host Chestnut Hill at 2:30 p.m.
