Metzger Scores as Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw Against RV Saint Anselm

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2024) – Powered by a goal from freshman Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), off an assist from junior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against regionally-ranked RV Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-2-1) earn their first draw of the season against the Hawks (2-1-1) who are ranked fourth in the East Region in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.

Mercy was led by Metzger who recorded her second goal of the season and by Dixon who dished out her third assist of the year. Freshman Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) made a career-high nine saves to earn her first career draw.

Saint Anselm was led by Zarina Pinto who scored and by Samantha Swidorski who made three saves.

Metzger gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in just the 2nd minute of action. Dixon fed a through ball to Metzger and the freshman fired the ball from the left side into the upper right corner of the net to give Mercy an early lead.

Becker made three saves in the first half to give Mercy a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Becker stopped four more shots in the second half to keep the game 1-0 heading to the final 10 minutes of play. Pinto found the back of the net in the 81st minute, off a Riley DiGilio assist, to tie the game at 1-1.

Becker made two more saves to keep the score tied and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Saint Anselm held an 18-4 edge in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 21st when they host D'Youville at 2:30 p.m.
