DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2024) – Powered by a goal from junior Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) and a game-high seven saves from senior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS), the No. 24 Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-0-2, 1-0-1 ECC) earn their second tie of the season and remain unbeaten in ECC play. The Saints (1-4-1, 0-0-1 ECC) record their first draw of the season.
Mercy was led by Bacigalupo who netted his second goal of the season and by junior Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) who dished out his first assist of the season. Elvestad recorded seven saves to earn the tie.
D'Youville was led by Shawn Richardson who scored and by Matthew Solorio who made four saves.
Elvestad made four saves in the first 30 minutes of action and Solorio stopped two shots to keep the game scoreless. Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Bacigalupo fired a cross from Hanken Tjostheim into the upper right corner of the net.
Elvestad made one more save in the 36th minute to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 and the Mavericks headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Elvestad stopped one more shot before Richardson tied the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute on a free kick.
Neither team would score again, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mercy held a 15-14 edge in shots and D'Youville held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 28th when they play at UDC at 3 p.m.
