Martin Scores as Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw With Molloy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — Powered by a goal from senior Hugo Martin (Malaga, Spain/Rogers State University), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 1-1 draw against ECC foe Molloy University in an "It's On Us" Awareness Game on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-3-3, 0-1-2 ECC) record their third draw in their last four games, while the Lions (1-2-4, 0-0-2 ECC) earn a tie against Mercy for the second straight year.

The match between Mercy and Molloy began with both teams fighting for control, but neither side found the back of the net early. Martin broke the deadlock in the 39th minute with a penalty kick, putting Mercy ahead 1-0. Molloy had a chance to equalize when Danu Kinsella Bishop's shot was saved by Mercy goalkeeper junior Mateo Sanchez (Anderson, S.C./Converse University) in the 42nd minute. The first half ended with Mercy maintaining their 1-0 lead.

Molloy tied the game 1-1 with a goal by Kinsella Bishop in the 72nd minute, assisted by Jack Hynes. Mercy's Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman) had an early shot saved by Molloy's goalkeeper Callum Hunt at the 48th minute. Despite several attempts, including a notable save by Sanchez from a shot by Kinsella Bishop in the 53rd minute, neither team could break the deadlock. The game ended with the score tied at 1-1.

Martin scored the only goal for Mercy, converting one of his three shots into a successful attempt. Sanchez was active in goal with three saves, facing 11 shots throughout the match. Sophomore Juan Gonzalez (Paterson, N.J./NJIT) contributed defensively and took two shots. Bacigalupo managed two shots, with one being on goal, adding pressure in the attacking third.

Hunt stood out in goal for Molloy, recording five saves in a match where he faced 14 shots, conceding only one goal. On the offensive end, Kinsella Bishop scored the team's lone goal, leading with seven shots and placing three on target. Hynes contributed to the attack by providing the team's only assist, adding a shot to his name as well.

Mercy held a 14-11 edge in shots, a 6-4 edge in shots on goal and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will host Southern Connecticut State University on October 4. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
