Serrano Scores Game-High Two Goals as Men's Soccer Earns 2-1 Win Over Pace

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Santiago Serrano (Bogota, Colombia/Rogers State University), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 2-1 win over Pace University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-5-3) have won two games in a row, while the Setters (4-7-2) have dropped two games in a row.

Mercy and Pace began their match with both teams testing each other's defenses early on. Serrano broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with a goal, assisted by junior Mario de Roque Zazón (Zaragoza, Spain/Newman University), giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Junior Mateo Sanchez (Anderson, S.C./Converse University), in goal for Mercy, made crucial saves, notably stopping a shot from Peter Magnuson III in the 31st minute and another from Niall Rodgers just before the half-time whistle. The first half ended with Mercy leading 1-0 after maintaining consistent pressure and taking several shots on goal.

Mercy extended their lead early in the second half with a goal by Serrano in the 52nd minute, assisted by senior Nicolás Cerda (Santiago, Chile/Andree English School), bringing the score to 2-0. In response, Pace's Kai Maor narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a goal in the 72nd minute, assisted by Tito Easter. Despite several attempts from both sides, including a shot by Serrano in the 80th minute that went wide, no further goals were scored. The game concluded with the Mavericks earning a 2-1 win.

Serrano scored two goals, including the game-winner, while taking five shots with two on goal. Sanchez contributed defensively, making two saves out of seven shots faced. Cerda and de Roque Zazón each added an assist, providing key offensive support. Senior Daniel Alvarez (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) played the final 14:48 in goal to help preserve the win.

Maor contributed significantly with one goal from one shot on target. Easter provided the only assist, aiding in the team's offensive efforts. In goal, Rocky Jing played a full 90 minutes, facing 15 shots and making one save, with two goals conceded.

Mercy held a 15-7 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 3-3. Mercy held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

In their next game, Mercy will travel to Rochester, N.Y., to face Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
