LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2025) – Powered by a game-high 10 points from senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), the No. 5/12 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 21-6 win at Georgian Court University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the seventh straight season and improve to 10-0 all-time against the Lions (0-2).
Mercy was led by Smith who had a game-high 10 points on a game-high six goals with a game-high-tying four assists. Graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College) had four goals and freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) had a goal and a game-high-tying four assists. Junior AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) added three assists and sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and an assist. Graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU), junior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) and sophomore Colin Orsino (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) also scored. Freshmen Jackson Redmond (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), Nicholas Filocamo (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and Kyle Freyer (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) all scored their first collegiate goals. Junior Danny Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), sophomore Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and senior Shane Roche (Milford, Pa./Onondaga CC) added assists. Junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 13-of-16 on faceoffs with a game-high eight ground balls and senior Ryan Resnick (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) went 8-of-14 on faceoffs with five ground balls. Freshman Gavin Lamere (Plainview, N.Y./Herricks) had a game-high three caused turnovers with four ground balls and sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made three saves in the first 24:40 minutes of action to earn the win. Junior Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) stopped a team-high eight shots in 30:20 minutes of play.
Georgian Court was led by Matt Dorrian and Doug Mackenzie who both had a team-high two goals. Vincent Burkhart made a game-high 10 saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 11:24 mark when Jimmy Osorio scored off a Smith assist to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Smith made it 2-0 just under a minute later, following a Barone assist, before a Brett Bridges man-up goal made it 2-1 with 10:04 left in the quarter. Smith scored two more goals to give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead and Jimmy Osorio closed the quarter with a goal from Bergersen to put Mercy up, 5-1, after the first quarter.
Smith began the second quarter with back-to-back goals putting the Mavericks up 7-1 with 13:44 left in the quarter. Dillon Osorio scored the next two goals to increase Mercy's lead to 9-1 at the 11:46 mark and Jimmy Osorio made it 10-1 less than 15 seconds later after a Norton assist. Hunsberger, Smith and Redmond tacked on three more goals to give Mercy a commanding 13-1 lead with 5:20 on the clock. Mercy headed into halftime with a 15-3 lead.
Freyer, Dillon Osorio, Jimmy Osorio and Nicholas Filocamo scored goals in the third quarter to give Mercy a commanding lead after the third quarter.
Orsino, Abrahall, Bergersen and Babnik scored goals in the fourth quarter, giving Mercy the convincing 21-6 win.
Mercy held a 44-30 edge in shots, a 39-27 edge in ground balls and went 21-of-30 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 23rd when they host Bentley at 2 p.m.
