DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2025) – Powered by junior Angelina Barrera (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and sophomores Grace Lesko (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) and Amani Abuhatab (West Haven, N.Y./West Haven) scoring in double figures, the Mercy University women's basketball team earned a 55-38 win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Friday night at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center.
The Mavericks (13-7, 7-3 ECC) have won three games in a row and sweep the season series with the Saints (5-15, 3-8 ECC) for the second straight year.
Mercy was led by Barrera who had a game-high 17 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor with five rebounds and three assists. Lesko recorded 16 points and a game-high-tying eight rebounds with four assists and Abuhatab had 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with a game-high-tying eight rebounds with three assists. Sophomore Molly Boek (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) added four points and freshman Caitlin Leary (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) scored three points. Freshman Morgan Miller (Branford, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) contributed two points.
D'Youville was led by Sofie Fuglsang who had a team-high 14 points.
Mercy scored the game's first eight points to take an 8-0 lead after two Abuhatab free throws with 6:41 left in the quarter. A Fuglsang three later cut the Mavericks' lead to four, 10-6, before Mercy ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to take an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter following a Lesko jumper.
The Saints began the second quarter on a 7-2 run to cut Mercy's lead to five, 20-15, with 4:39 left in the first half. The Mavericks closed the half on a 10-0 run, finished off by a Barrera three-point play to take a 30-15 lead at halftime.
A Barrera jumper at the 6:38 mark of the third quarter gave Mercy a game-high 20-point lead, 40-20. The Mavericks headed into the fourth quarter with a 45-28 lead.
An Anna Jankovic layup with 3:43 left cut the Mavericks' lead to 14, 52-38, but a Lesko layup and Barrera free throw gave Mercy a 55-38 lead with 1:58 left. Mercy cruised the rest of the way to earn the 55-38 win.
Mercy shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from downtown and 90.0 percent (9-of-10) from the foul line. D'Youville shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from beyond the arc and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 34-25 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, February 9th when they host Daemen at 12 p.m.
