Osorio Scores Game-High Six Goals as No. 14 Men's Lacrosse Plays at No. 8 Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Mar. 15, 2025) – Despite a game-high six goals from graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College), the No. 14 Mercy University men's lacrosse team dropped an 18-14 decision at No. 8 Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.

The Mavericks (3-3) have dropped three of their last four games and fall to the Hawks (3-0) for the third straight time.

Mercy was led by Osorio who had a game-high six goals with three ground balls. Graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) had three goals and an assist with three ground balls and junior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had two goals. Sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and a team-high three assists with three ground balls and senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had a goal and two assists. Freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshman Nicholas Filocamo (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) each had an assist. Sophomore Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist and four ground balls and junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 11-of-26 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had a team-high five ground balls and junior AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a team-high two caused turnovers. Sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made six saves in 49:45 minutes of action to take the loss. Junior Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) made three saves in 10:15 minutes of action.

Saint Anselm was led by Chris Claflin who had a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Finn Granara made a game-high 12 saves to earn the win.

The Hawks scored the game's first three goals to take a 3-0 lead with 9:32 left in the first quarter. Osorio got the Mavericks on the scoreboard at the 1:45 mark following a Bergersen assist to make it 3-1. A late Mark Boyle goal gave Saint Anselm a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

Osorio scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 4-2 with 9:04 left in the half. A Boyle goal at the 8:25 mark made it 5-2 before back-to-back goals from Osorio got Mercy to within one, 5-4, with 6:25 remaining in the half. A Boyle goal at the 3:01 mark made it 6-4 before a late Babnik goal cut the Hawks' lead to one, 6-5, at halftime.

Babnik began the scoring in the third quarter, tying the game at 6-6 less than a minute into the quarter. Saint Anselm scored the next four goals to take a 10-6 lead with 7:25 left in the quarter. Bergersen ended the Hawks run with a goal from Smith to make it 10-7. A Colin Mulvey man-up goal gave Saint Anselm an 11-7 lead with 4:24 on the clock. Hunsberger followed with a man-down goal from Filocamo to make it 11-8. The Hawks recorded three straight goals to take a 14-8 lead with 2:19 left in the quarter. Goals from Babnik and Smith to end the quarter cut Saint Anselm's lead to four, 14-10, after three quarters.

The Hawks scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take a 16-10 lead with 13:24 left. Osorio and Duchnowski scored back-to-back goals to make it 16-12 at the 8:36 mark. Goals from Matt Lemay and Mulvey gave the hosts an 18-12 lead with 2:23 remaining. Osorio and Duchnowski scored two late goals to make it 18-14, but it was not enough, and Saint Anselm earned the 18-14 win.

Mercy held a 46-44 edge in shots, a 34-31 edge in ground balls and went 14-of-36 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 22nd when they play at D'Youville at 2 p.m.
