McSweeney Tosses Complete Game Shutout and Harris Records Team-High Four Hits and Two RBI as Softball Sweeps Staten Island

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 19, 2025) – Powered by a complete game shutout from freshman Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in game one and a team-high four hits and two RBI from graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), the Mercy University softball team earned 3-0 and 4-2 wins over ECC foe College of Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon in their ECC and home openers at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (7-7, 2-0 ECC) snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 13-5 all-time against the Dolphins (9-9, 0-2 ECC). Mercy starts 2-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2021.

Game 1: Mercy 3, Staten Island 0

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Harris doubled with one out and later scored on a sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) RBI single.

The Mavericks scored two runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored after sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) singled to center field to make it 2-0. The score stayed 2-0 until the third inning when Mercy scored a run to take a 3-0 lead. Jantz walked with two outs and Lula and freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) followed with singles to load the bases. Reyer then recorded an infield single, scoring Jantz to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.

Mercy made it 4-0 in the fourth inning when Murphy doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Harris RBI double.

The Dolphins scored two runs in the fifth inning to make it 4-2. However, senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings to give Mercy a 4-2 game two win and the sweep.
