DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 5, 2025) – Powered by a game-high four goals from senior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and 10 saves from junior Olivia LaMonica (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township), the No. 23 Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a 15-4 win over No. 24 Assumption University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1) improve to 5-5 all-time against the Greyhounds (1-1). The 11-goal margin of victory is the largest for Mercy over Assumption.
Mercy was led by Hansen who had a game-high four goals and by sophomore Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) who had three goals. Freshman Ashlinn Kelly (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had three goals and three caused turnovers and freshman Kayden Meyer (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) had two goals and two caused turnovers. Freshman Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) scored two goals and junior Maeghan Callow (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had a goal, two assists and five draw controls. Senior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had three caused turnovers and five draw controls and junior Emily Marino (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. LaMonica made 10 saves to earn her third win of the season.
Assumption was led by Kyle Johnston who scored a team-high two goals. Skylar Troyan made a game-high 14 saves to take the loss.
The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead with 13:33 left in the first quarter after a Johnston goal. Meyer evened the score at 1-1 at the 10:44 mark on a free position goal. Hansen and Meyer closed the quarter with goals to give Mercy a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.
Assumption opened the scoring in the second quarter to make it 3-2 with 12:37 left in the half. Wallace netted her first goal of the game at the 9:00 mark to give Mercy a 4-2 lead before Molly Weiand scored to make it 4-3 with 5:52 remaining in the half. Hansen and Morales scored the final two goals of the quarter to give Mercy a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Callow, Kelly and Wallace began the third quarter with goals to give Mercy a 9-3 lead with 2:52 left in the third quarter. Johnston made it 9-4 before Kelly and Morales recorded the final two goals of the quarter to give the Mavericks an 11-4 lead after three quarters.
Hansen scored two more goals in the fourth and Kelly and Wallace also scored to give Mercy a 15-4 lead with 3:47 left. The Mavericks defense limited the Greyhounds to just one goal in the second half, giving Mercy the 15-4 win.
Mercy held a 35-14 edge in shots, a 27-22 edge in ground balls and a 15-7 edge in draw controls.
